Billy Idol – Mony Mony (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Mony Mony” is a song originally released in 1968 by American pop rock band Tommy James and the Shondells.

British rock artist Billy Idol released a cover version in 1981 (on the Don’t Stop EP). Along with the track “Baby Talk”, Idol’s version of “Mony Mony” went to #7 on the Billboard dance chart. A live recording of the song became a hit for Idol in 1987 as well while promoting his then-forthcoming compilation work Vital Idol. The live version went to No. 1, coincidentally displacing Tiffany’s cover of another Tommy James song, “I Think We’re Alone Now”, from the top spot. It also finished directly behind the Tiffany song at #19 in the 1987 year-end Billboard chart.

Idol’s version gave rise to an interesting custom. When the song was performed live in concert or played at a club or dance, people would shout a certain formulaic (and usually obscene) phrase in the two measures following each line, for example, “Hey! Get laid, get fucked!” This led to the song being banned at high-school dances across North America, although the custom continues at Idol concerts today.

Icehouse – Hey Little Girl (Special Club Mix) (Europe 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982

“Hey Little Girl” is a single released by Australian band Icehouse, the second single from the band’s 1982 album, Primitive Man. The album and single were co-produced by band member and the track’s writer, Iva Davies, and Keith Forsey (Billy Idol). It was released in October 1982, on Regular Records on 7″ and 12″ vinyl formats. UK and Europe releases by Chrysalis Records were also on 7″ and 12″ formats, but with different track listings. The single was then released in the US in 1983 on the same formats. On “Hey Little Girl”, Iva Davies uses the Linn drum machine — the first for an Australian recording. “Hey Little Girl” peaked at No. 7 on the Australian singles chart and No. 2 in Switzerland, No. 5 in Germany, Top 20 in UK, Sweden and Netherlands, and No. 31 on U.S. the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

I previously posted the U.S. 12″ promo which includes alternate remixes you can find it here.
