Billy Idol – Mony Mony (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Mony Mony” is a song originally released in 1968 by American pop rock band Tommy James and the Shondells.

British rock artist Billy Idol released a cover version in 1981 (on the Don’t Stop EP). Along with the track “Baby Talk”, Idol’s version of “Mony Mony” went to #7 on the Billboard dance chart. A live recording of the song became a hit for Idol in 1987 as well while promoting his then-forthcoming compilation work Vital Idol. The live version went to No. 1, coincidentally displacing Tiffany’s cover of another Tommy James song, “I Think We’re Alone Now”, from the top spot. It also finished directly behind the Tiffany song at #19 in the 1987 year-end Billboard chart.

Idol’s version gave rise to an interesting custom. When the song was performed live in concert or played at a club or dance, people would shout a certain formulaic (and usually obscene) phrase in the two measures following each line, for example, “Hey! Get laid, get fucked!” This led to the song being banned at high-school dances across North America, although the custom continues at Idol concerts today.

I grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia, Canada, and at our school dances we’d chant “Hey, Motherfucker! Get Laid! Get Fucked!” In retrospect, I can’t believe the song didn’t get banned at our dances, but I guess parents were none the wiser since most of our dances were held at a community hall and not at school. Ah, to be young and stupid again! 🙂 Thanks for the post and the memories.

I remember Generation X’s (Billy Idol) first UK TV appearance on the Marc Show (Marc Bolan)in 1977, Billy really made a name for himself when he moved to New York City and became a successful solo artist. Steve Stevens was the perfect guitarist, he’s style reminded me of Warren Cuccurullo. White Wedding, Rebel Yell and Sweet Sixteen being my favourites. Billy did a fantastic cover of Mony Mony originally a 1968 No. 1 UK single by Tommy James and the Shondells. Another Excellent Post, Thank You Paul. I would love to see Soft Cell’s Tainted Love extended dance version with… Read more »

Thanks Paul for yet another fantastic mastering.

The artwork is where I have the most difficultly in reproducing in seamless imaging.

This is turning out to be a fantastic week for me personally as I love these big and bold dance rock records!! I really love this “Hung Like A Pony” remix better than the version off “Vital Idol” as it really is more driving and all. I enjoy the dub too. It’s also great to have the “live” hit single version of the song as well. It’s also cool that the infamous chant is being discussed too. I’ve also heard it as, “Hey, what you say? Get laid, get drunk.” At fraternity parties the guys would exclaim the “Hey!” part… Read more »

Technically the chant was “hey, hey! What? Get laid! Get fucked!” 🙂

Thank you so much for this fantastic rip, Paul!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting this one. We actually added another piece to that chant when I was in college. It went “Hey! Hey what?! Get laid, get fucked!”. Ah, memories…

Take Care,
Doug

Same here! Especially the album version with the longer intro.

Eyes Without A Face reminded/reminds me so much of Cars’ I’m Not The One song back in the day.
