Robert Palmer – I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” is a song written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and originally performed by Cherrelle in 1984. In 1986, “I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” was covered by Robert Palmer. Palmer’s cover fared better on the pop charts while Cherrelle’s version was a hit on the R&B charts.

Robert Palmer recorded a cover one year later and it was released as the fifth single from his 1985 album Riptide. The single hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986, only behind “Amanda” by Boston, and the music video, which featured women much like the ones from “Addicted to Love”, hit No. 1 on MTV on October 17, 1986. In the U.K. the single reached no. 9.

Excellent post. Rare 12 inch acapella and dub remixes not available on CD. Thanks Paul!

I have both versions of this track in 12″ versions.

While Cherrelee’s version is a spunky R&B track with a good dance flavor. Robert Palmer’s version was to me more sultry and the models/female musicians that were in the video defined the 80’s club style scene. Both tracks are excellent in there own way but I always have preferred this version

Thanks Paul.

Hey DJ Paul,

I was listening to track #4 and noticed that the song ends at 2:34. Is there a glitch in the rip?

Thanks again paul,

I enjoyed this track, although for a while all the robert palmer
songs seemed to sound the same, and look the same.

It even reminds me of the sound of power station too.

nice mixes, and sounds good.

Great mixes and excellent mastering as always Paul. Strange coincidence that I was searching for the album track of this song just yesterday, and downloaded it along with a couple of Cherrelle tracks that I recalled thinking about her original version of this. What are the chances?

Paul!!! This week is starting out amazing. First there was yesterday’s “Under The Gun” and now it’s Robert Palmer!!! Wow!! I’m just dazed and excited!! I remember when this first came out, and being very familiar with Cherrelle’s version, Robert Palmer’s version certainly made an impact on me. I’ve always adored Mr. Palmer, from his “Bad Case of Loving You” to “Johnny and Mary” to his stuff with The Power Station. His music really impressed me very much. I’m thrilled to hear these versions and it’s so cool that “Addicted To Love” is on here too. I’m so preferring your… Read more »
