The Rolling Stones – Undercover Of The Night (US 12″)

“Undercover of the Night” is the lead track and first single from English rock and roll band The Rolling Stones’ 1983 album Undercover.

“Undercover of the Night” was released as the first single taken from the album on 1 November 1983. The initial reception was warm with the song reaching number 9 in the US and number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, though the violent depictions spelled out by Jagger were believed to be why its popularity quickly waned. Jagger in Jump Back’s liner notes: “I think it’s really good but it wasn’t particularly successful at the time because songs that deal overtly with politics never are that successful, for some reason.” Richards countered: “There were a lot more overlays on this track because there was a lot more separation in the way we were recording at that time. Mick and I were starting to come to loggerheads.”

A music video was made in Mexico City for the song, featuring Jagger as a detective helping a woman (played by Elpidia Carrillo) follow her boyfriend’s (also played by Jagger) kidnappers and Richards as the leader of the kidnappers, who eventually shoots Jagger. The music video, directed by Julien Temple, was considered to be too violent for MTV (they did eventually air an edited version, but not before 9 PM due to the violent imagery). An uncensored version of the video was included in the band’s Video Rewind compilation.

The Psychedelic Furs – Heartbreak Beat (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Heartbreak Beat” is a song by the British new wave band the Psychedelic Furs, originally released in 1986 as the lead single for their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight. The song was written by band members Richard Butler, John Ashton, and Tim Butler. The song also appeared on the UK music compilation Hits 5 in November 1986.

Issued as a single, “Heartbreak Beat” reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became the Psychedelic Furs’ only Top 40 hit in the United States. The song also reached the top 20 of both the Billboard Mainstream Rock and Dance charts. Comparatively, the song was less successful in the United Kingdom and peaked at #79 on the UK Singles Chart.

“Pretty In Pink” is a song by the English band The Psychedelic Furs, originally released in 1981 as a single from the band’s second album, Talk Talk Talk. The song inspired the 1986 film of the same name and a re-recorded version of the song was included on the film’s soundtrack.

The original version of “Pretty in Pink” peaked at number 43 on the UK Singles Chart in July 1981. Allmusic writer Bill Janovitz credits producer Steve Lillywhite for finding “the ideal sound for the band, with a perfect blend of classic pop, punk, and art-rock elements”. Janovitz called it “the definitive take” of the song.

The 1986 version reached number 18 in the UK and number 41 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart. Janovitz described this version as “ho-hum, streamlined, (and) radio-ready”.

The Escape Club – Shake For The Sheik (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“Shake For The Sheik” is a song by English pop-rock band The Escape Club, from their 1988 album Wild Wild West. Written by the band members and produced by Chris Kimsey, the song was released as the album’s second single and reached number 28 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1989.

“Shake for the Sheik”, the follow-up to the U.S. number one hit “Wild, Wild West”, was released as a single in November 1988. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at number 81 in December. The song spent five weeks in the Top 40 section of the chart, peaking at number 28 in January 1989. The single remained on the Hot 100 for 14 weeks. “Shake for the Sheik” reached number 24 on the Singles Sales chart and number 28 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. The song also reached number 46 on the New Zealand Singles Chart.

Lead vocalist Trevor Steel said the song “was going down well, especially since we considered ourselves a live band. The humor of the title was a little lost on the U.S. audience, since Americans pronounce Sheik differently than we in the UK do.”
