Various – The Record Mirror EP (UK 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

A. Front

The UK music magazine Record Mirror was well-respected for its coverage of dance music. In the 1980s and up to its closure in 1991 it issued numerous 7″ EPs with rare and exclusive tracks, many by electronic artists. This solid 4 track EP was released on March 22, 1986.

Special thanks to the Free EP site and Wikipedia for the information.

SIDE A:
New Order – Sub-Culture (Exclusive Remix) 7:09
Producer, Written-By – New Order
Remix – John Robie
Remix [Uncredited] – Joseph Watt

A collector’s item for fans of one of the most collectable bands of their time. This is genuinely an exclusive remix which has never been officially released since. Sub-Culture began its life on New Order’s classic 1985 album ‘Low Life’. In 1986, the track was remixed by John Robie and released as a single. However, the mix was badly received and the single became a rare critical and commercial failure for the band, only hitting #63 in the UK chart. Factory graphic designer Peter Saville objected to the release of the remix of Sub-Culture to such an extent he refused to design a sleeve explaining why the single was only distributed in a plain black sleeve. As tends to be the norm with New Order releases, there has always been confusion over the source of this remix. The label credits Robie as being on remix duty again but it actually seems to be an edit of the first of several Razormaid remixes of the track. Razormaid being one of the largest DJ subscription remix services in the world, this became one of the very rare instances when such a remix was released outside the confines of their stringent subscription service. Despite being regarded as superior to the official Robie mixes, this EP is still the only legit place to find this.

Raymonde – Jennifer Wants (Exclusive Track) 2:06
Producer – Raymonde, Sexton
Written-By – Maker*, Huish*

Despite a huge Smiths connection – Raymonde frequently supported them and lead singer James Maker used to be their back up singer and dancer – the band only released on overlooked album in 1987, Babelogue. Although Raymonde never lived up to Record Mirror’s billing of them as one of the year’s most exciting newcomers, Maker made some money from his old mate nearly two decades on in 2004 when Morrissey not only covered Raymonde track No One Can Hold A Candle To You as a B side and live, but included the original version on his own compilation, the NME FreeEP ‘Songs To Save Your Life’ in 2004. “Jennifer Wants”, this track is absolutely exclusive to this EP so a must for all Morrissey fans.

SIDE B:
Hipsway – Bad Thing Longing (Preview From Their Forthcoming Album) 4:06
Producer – Hipsway, Paul Stavely O’Duffy*
Written-By – Skinner*, Travers*, McElhone*, Jones*

In between featuring in two hugely successful bands – Altered Images and Texas – guitarist Johnny Mcelhone formed Hipsway in 1984. The band’s eponymous debut album just missed out on a Top 40 place but single The Honeythief hit #17 in 1986. This track, at the time of this EP’s release an exclusive preview, was featured on their debut. Despite this early promise, the band folded in 1989.

Adventures, The – Walk Away Renee (Specially Recorded For Record Mirror) 3:16
Producer – Adventures, The
Written-By – Calilli*, Brown*, Sansoni*

The Adventures were an Irish folk rock band who briefly threatened to become one of the UK’s biggest bands. Backed by eventual Spice Girls guru Simon Fuller, he ensured The Adventures achieved plenty of airplay and music press attention. Despite a Top 20 hit in 1988 with Broken Land, it never really happened and The Adventures became one of the country’s best kept secrets instead. This faithful cover of The Left Banke’s Walk Away Renee, made famous by The Four Tops, was specially recorded for Record Mirror and remains exclusive to this release. Arguably, as the band had already released their album Theodore & Friends and its singles to little success, this was most likely an attempt by Fuller to keep them in the public eye in the absence of any new material.

Various ‎– Rhythm Stick 1-8 (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

A. Front

Trick or treat goblins and ghouls. This is a special Rhythm Stick brew just for you. A special Halloween issue.

Rhythm Stick was a DJ-only subscription/remix service based in Cazadero, CA (USA) that operated during 1989 -1992 ~ releases were pressed in limited quantities and featured mixes of Mainstream dance / Top 40 / NRG / dance classic tracks released on double vinyl and their CD’s contained the ‘best of’ tracks from those vinyl releases.

Rhythm Stick (With The Adventures of Mikie Man) staff consisted of the following people: Gini Spiersch, Director; Steve Bourasa, Producer & Mixer; and mixing djs: Glenn Cattanach, Mario S. David, Jim “Hip-Hop” Hopkins, Mark Watkins, and would also feature guest DJ’s.

The subtitle, (With The Adventures of Mikie Man) was connected to their logo and continuing cartoon series. These cartoon characters were originally drawn by Gini each night that Michael Lewis dee-jayed. Over a two year period, three books of drawings were completed and now with Rhythm Stick as their medium, the “Adventures of Mikie Man” were presented by the artist, Jameo. Each jacket would present the character cartoons representing the staff and contributors to Rhythm Stick.

All productions of Rhythm Stick were dedicated to the late Michael J. Lewis, the original “Mikie Man”.

Various – NRG-MIXXX Volume One Issue Four (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

A. Front

Side One

NRG-MIXXX was a Pro DJ Only Remix Service based in Dallas Texas, produced by Tony Nunes & Wayne West. Each single record issue featured tracks, which were all digitally edited and remixed. As always, remixes found on these issues were original and never issued elsewhere.

With this issue you get a fun 16 minute Dead Or Alive “Nude Medley” as well as a great freestyle track from Alta Dustin and a housed up Taylor Dayne Medley.

NRG-MIXXX remix service which was active during the late 1980’s and early 90’s is now like many others no longer in operation.

Various – Hot Tracks Series 6 Issue 9 (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

Side A

Side B

HALLOWEEN ISSUE!

“Hot Tracks” Series 6, Issue 9 was a special Halloween Issue released in 1987. This set includes frightening remixes and mind melting dance hits. One of the coolest things about this release is the inclusion of “He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask)” by Alice Cooper taken from the film “Friday The 13th, Part VI: (Jason Lives)”. This track never had a 12″ remix and has really been overlooked. So glad Hot Tracks remixed this one! Dim the lights have some candy corn and enjoy this double 12″ from Hot Tracks!

Below are the linear notes from the original release:

SIDE A:
Alice Cooper – He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask) (Steve Bourasa “Late Night Edit”) 5:25
Remix – Steve Bourasa
Written-By – A. Cooper*, B. Hill*, K. Roberts*
BPM 120 COLD DRAG

From the movie “Friday The 13th, Part VI: (Jason Lives)…Steve worked from the CD, the original length was 3:50 and he extended the track to 5:28. He added a 64 beat intro and a 32 beat outro and the traditional cold end. Who would ever believe Alice Cooper on Hot Tracks???

Chantoozies, The – Witch Queen (Halloween Mix) 7:00
Remix – Steve Bourasa
Written-By – L. Vegas*, P. Vegas*
BPM 126 FADE

Steve had fun with this mix; using last years Hot Tracks (Series 5, Issue Nine), he laced this track with the special effects to spice it up for Halloween. Also, to be noted, we wish to thank Lisa at Mushroom Records in Sydney, Australia for her help on this project.

SIDE B:
Full House – Communicate (Brian Middleton Extended Edit) 6:53
Remix – Brian Middleton
Written-By – D. Wilson*, R. Patterson*
BPM 120 COLD

Brian is new to our editing staff and we wish him a warm welcome. The edit description was not available at press time; but in listening to the edit, one can tell a good technical job was done and the track is quite workable. Here’s one for those D.J.’s who wrote in and said “more male vocals please”.

Claudja Barry – Secret Affair (Mike Carroll Edit) 6:50
Remix – Mike Carroll
Written-By – C. Barry*, J. Korduletsch*
BPM 122 COLD

So many version, so little time!!…This record came supplied with four mixes. We worked with three of them to come up with this tasty version. By the way, who’s that girl carrying on like that, after the break? (certainly not Madonna!) Mike Carroll goes cryptic….

SIDE C:
E.G. Dailey* – Mind Over Matter (Mike Carroll Edit) 6:55
Remix – Mike Carroll
Written-By – M. Jay*, R. Palombi*
BPM 126 COLD

This record was given a smooth intro and builds quickly into the vocal section. The track then follows witha straightforward break, (unlike the commercial 12″) and finishes up with an extended outro. (our apologies for mis-spelling E.G.Daily on the labels & stickers)

Diodati* – Terrorist Attack (Hostage Edit) 7:00
Remix – Mark Watkins
Written-By –  Diodati*
BPM 128 COLD ECHO

Mark combined the four mixes to give it a “Stock/Aitken/Waterman” sound. He then restructured the song to create a dance floor-terror, (straight from his laboratory); it could only end ….cold. Nice to hear from you again Mark, where have you been??

SIDE D:
Musical Reporters – Blow Job (Jim “Hip Hop” Hopkins Edit) 6:50
Remix – Jim “Hip Hop” Hopkins*
Written-By – C. Inger*, Van Oekel*, Pragakhan*
BPM 118 COLD DRAG

Jim used the import 12″ and rearranged all those tasty words to recreate a new story for us. The intro was completely reconstructed, the break: extended to 64 beats and the outro was redone and extended to 64 beats; consequently, “Blow Job” comes to a cold end….. You will want to listen to this one a few times before programming.

Nasty Boys, The – Nasty Relations (FHA Edit) 5:31
Remix – Glenn Cattanach
Written-By – D. Melotti*, L. Genovesi*
BPM 120 COLD

Utilizing both the vocal and house mixes from the Italian 12″, Glenn combined the two to bring us this Hot Tracks FHA Edit. This version is “Tightened up” and includes all the things needed to make it work on your floor: long intro, mid-point break and 16 measure outro with a cold end. Get down, Get nasty!!
