Prince And The Revolution – Mountains (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986

“Mountains” is a 1986 song by Prince and The Revolution, from the album Parade, the soundtrack to the film Under the Cherry Moon. It was written by The Revolution members Wendy & Lisa together with Prince. The extended 12″ single version of the song runs for nearly ten minutes.

It reached number 23 in the US but only 45 in the UK. The B-side was the instrumental “Alexa de Paris”, one of the few tracks from this project featuring a guitar solo. Both songs appear in the film Under the Cherry Moon, with the video for “Mountains” playing as the credits roll. The version shown on MTV to promote the single was in color as opposed to the film’s black-and-white version.

Sheila E. – The Belle Of St. Mark (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“The Belle of St. Mark” is a song recorded by singer/percussionist Sheila E. The song was released in November 1984 in the United States and in the Netherlands, and in February 1985 in other markets. It peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and in December 1984 and #68 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles Charts in 1985. It reached the top 10 in the Netherlands and New Zealand as well as the top 20 in Australia, the UK, and Ireland, and was an NME “Single of the Week”.

The song’s lyrics tell of an androgynous “frail but passionate creature”, referred to as “he” throughout, but called the feminine “Belle”. The song implies the Belle is French (viz. the lyrics, “His Paris hair, it blows in the warm Parisian air / That blows whenever his Paris hair is there”) but St. Mark is commonly known as a location in Venice, Italy, although it may be a reference to St Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery namesake of St. Mark’s Place in the East Village, Manhattan.

Sheila E. – Holly Rock (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

A. Front

Side 1

princehype

“Holly Rock” was the fifth single taken from the motion picture soundtrack “Krush Groove” by American singer, drummer, and percussionist Sheilas E., who also performs the song in the film. Written and produced by Prince (credited to Sheila E.), “Holly Rock” failed to chart.

Prince also uses the term “Holly Rock” in Dream Factory, which was recorded later in 1985. Hollyrock is the name used for Hollywood in the TV cartoon series The Flintstones, which may have inspired the track.
