R.E.M. – (Don’t Go Back To) Rockville (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville” is the second and final single released by American rock band R.E.M. from its second studio album Reckoning. The song failed to chart on either the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Singles Charts.

The song was written by Mike Mills (credited to Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe), in 1980, as a plea to his then-girlfriend, Ingrid Schorr, not to return to Rockville, Maryland, where her parents lived. Schorr, who later became a journalist, has written about her amusement with the factual inaccuracies about her relationship with Mills and the background of the song that often appear in books about the band. Peter Buck has stated that the song was originally performed in a punk/thrash style and that it was recorded for this single in its now more-familiar country-inspired arrangement as a joke aimed at R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs.

“Weird Al” Yankovic – I Lost On Jeopardy (US 12″ Promo)

“I Lost on Jeopardy” is a song by “Weird Al” Yankovic from his second album, “Weird Al” Yankovic in 3-D, released in 1984. The song is a parody of “Jeopardy” by The Greg Kihn Band, released in 1983, and its refrain “Our love’s in jeopardy”. The parody’s lyrics center on the game show Jeopardy!, and features a guest vocal from Don Pardo, who announced for Jeopardy! from 1964 to 1975.

The song was released just prior to the revival of Jeopardy! in 1984, though contrary to popular theory, the revival was already in the works and was not inspired by Yankovic’s song.

The song peaked at #81 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Vesta Williams – Once Bitten Twice Shy (US 12″ Promo)

This 12″ holds a special place for me, it was the first 12″ donated to Burning The Ground. I originally posted it on October ‎7, ‎2010.

“Once Bitten, Twice Shy” was the debut single by American singer-songwriter Vesta Williams taken from the LP “VESTA”. The song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and #45 on the Billboard Dance Chart. The song also charted in the UK at #14, #20 Netherlands, #21 in Ireland, and #42 in New Zealand.

Sadly Vesta Williams passed away on September 22, 2011, at age 53.

Ramones – I Wanna Be Sedated (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“I Wanna Be Sedated” is a song by the American punk rock band the Ramones. It is one of the band’s best known songs. It was originally released on their fourth album, Road to Ruin, in September 1978 and was the B-side of the UK single “She’s the One” released on September 21, 1978. The song was later released as a single in the Netherlands in 1979, then in the U.S. in 1980 by RSO Records from the Times Square soundtrack album.

In 1988 the song was remixed and released as a single in the U.S. to promote the band’s compilation album Ramones Mania (The Best Of 1976-1988). A music video was also filmed in September 1988 and received heavy rotation on MTV.

The A-Side of this 12″ is exclusive to this release.
