BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983
“Loving You, Hating Me” was the proposed third UK single from the album The Art of Falling Apart by English synth-pop duo Soft Cell. It was never actually released in the UK and only saw release as a single in the US. The “Special Mix” contained in this US 12″ promo is unique to this release and has not appeared on CD. The duration of this track is printed on the sleeve as 6:59 while the label lists 7:50. The label is correct.
“Loving You Hating Me” is a song about the battle of the sexes – a punch up rather than a full blown war! In a January 1983 interview with Soft Cell published in Melody Maker, Marc Almond explained: “Everybody has sadomasochistic tendencies, most people love to be hurt because of the drama and it’s pleasurable hurting somebody else because, afterward, you can feel really sorry for them”.

Thank you very much Paul.
Hi,
Thank you for sharing this FABULOUS extended version of this very moving song, one of the best Soft Cell songs imho.
PS : The original full length 12″ version of Say Hello Wave Goodbye (another very moving Soft Cell gemm) also needs the DJPaulT treatment… :-). All digitally available versions are edited versions with the end cut off. Thanks in advance !
Kind regards,
“cispas”

Same here. Never knew this mix existed. Thanks a million.
And Happy Birthday!
Your service to Soft Cell fans is impeccable DjPaul! People need to hear these sublime tracks, Heat is my favourite track of this period, with Torch (12″ of course) being my favourite of all their tracks. I thought the whole of The Art of Falling album was so dark & intense, a tour de force often overlooked. In my opinion it is up there with Joy Division’s Closer as an 80s masterpiece. Interesting note, on the forthcoming box-set, there will be the one track I’ve never been able to get my hands on & that is Forever the Same extended… Read more »
Oh, Soft Cell!! This band means the world to me. Marc and Dave were such a force!! They worked really hard to make an impression, an indelible impression. They chose singles that weren’t very commercial and did their best to further their artistic expression. They were my soundtrack growing up. I know, it sounds sad, but Marc and Dave gave me a peek into things that were new and strange to me. I love their pathos and love for the underdog and the “waifs and strays” of this world. I couldn’t relate on all accounts, but they created a dream… Read more »
Thanks for the great insight into a young Jeff’s life 🙂
Oh I love this mix!! thanks Paul!!
You’re welcome Carl 🙂
Djpaul you are the MAN!!
This is a real treasure, while I was gathering my Loving you hating me versions since they first released them you came up with this! Excellent choice.
The only thing now I miss is the Other people – Have a nice day! one of Dave Ball’s rarest 12″ single https://www.discogs.com/Other-People-Have-A-Nice-Day/master/98125.
that will definitely be gone make my day 🙂
Thanks Paul for all these great postings.
I will do my best to locate that one Hugo 🙂
From now on I’m calling you Sherlock Holmes instead of DJ Paul.
How do you find these treasures?
Thanks Stephen I will accept the new name 🙂
Oh!!! yeah!!!
🙂 🙂
Thanks Paul, it’s fair to say this song isn’t really single material, but I guess the record company were clutching at straws by this point – Soft Cell were so great at ignoring everyone else and just doing whatever they wanted.
I actually prefer it over Tainted Love hope I don’t get hated on for that 🙂
Wow Paul, what a fantastic post! This was a well hidden treasure and thanks to you we get to discover it. I knew this beautiful song but I never heard this mix. It’s absolutely brilliant! The label failed to release it on CD but you Paul are here to come to the rescue to repair this injustice. Thanks a million for sharing with us your crystal clear rip. These posts are so much better when it’s the only chance to discover remixes never released on CD before.
Daniel, Beautifully written!! People like you are so eloquent when it comes to putting heart-felt feelings about Paul into words. Burning The Ground is such a revelation and a Godsend. I fully believe we’d be lost without Paul. His work is a living record and archive to the legacy of 80’s and 90’s music. And like you said Daniel, “These posts are so much better when it’s the only chance to discover remixes never released on CD before.” I hope that people realize and treasure the importance of Paul’s work. It would be a devastation if something happened to BTG.… Read more »
You are just the nicest sweetest person Daniel. Thanks so much for being part of the BTG family 🙂
Thank you Paul, another treasure.
You’re welcome, Joey 🙂
Hey Paul
You inspire me so much with your choice of music. I am so deeply greatful. You really brought back Soft Cell into my focus. Some weeks ago I bought their 3-cd remix collection through which I got to know “Loving You” in the first place. I learned that it was the b-side of the “Soul Inside” 12inch. That remix clocks in at 6.38 – I haven´t compared that version and your fabulous promo 12inch yet.
The b-side “Heat” is just wonderful though.
Thank you again for being such an inspiration.
Thank you for such a thoughtful comment Song_and_Dance 🙂
Many thanks, Paul. Such a great song – the whole album was so good – and I’ve needed this in my collection.
You’re welcome, Jonathan 🙂
Wow, you rock Paul. Thank you 🙂
You’re welcome Mark 🙂
Thanks Paul.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
I have one thing to say… You’re on fire!
Oh and naturally, many thanks
Thank you, Neil! 🙂
Soft Cell and Marc Almond have created music that is always catchy, with well crafted lyrics, Thanks for another great post Paul.
Marc Almond is also featured on many tracks on Marc Bolan: The Celebration DVD concert (2012), and sings Tainted Love with the original singer Gloria Jones, who was also Bolan’s girlfriend until his tragic death in 1977. Also features Blondie’s Clem Burke.
You’re welcome, John. Thanks for the info too 🙂
Whenever you post something by Soft Cell/Marc Almond, I can’t stop myself from bubbling all over with so much excitement!! And Paul, I don’t think I’ve ever heard this mix. I only know the version from the “Soul Inside” EP and this is different!! Oh Boy, will wonders never cease!?! You are so exceptional for posting this one. And Whoa, there’s also “Heat” on here too which is another one of my favorite Soft Cell songs!! This song has so much drama to it and sounds like something from a horror movie. I just can’t get over this. I am… Read more »
Thank you, Jeff. I know you are gonna love this mix. You’re tops too 🙂
