Love And Rockets – Ball Of Confusion (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Ball Of Confusion” is a song originally recorded in 1970 by Motown vocal group The Temptations.

In 1985 English alternative rock band Love And Rockets released the song as the debut single from the album Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven. The song’s music video received heavy airplay on MTV but the song failed to chart. Love And Rockets consisted of former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar, and saxophone), David J (bass guitar and vocals) and Kevin Haskins (drums and synthesizers) after that group split in 1983.

In 1986 the song was released in the U.S. as a single and was included on the band’s second album Express.

Sooooo excited to see this gem on your site! I was hugely into this band my sophomore year of college, and to this day, one of my favorite concerts ever was seeing the band in 1986. I had (and have) this album on vinyl, and other records of theirs on vinyl or cassette, but none of it on CD/digital, so THANK YOU for providing this digital version of songs I’ve so long enjoyed – and can’t wait to hear the remixes after all these years!

For the story, in 1985 “Ball of Confusion” was not on the UK Vinyl Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven. It was only on a 12″ with another non-album track called “Inside the Outside” on the B-side, but the Temptation cover was on the Canadian CD that same year (with the USA Mix). Strangely when the CD was released in the UK in 1986, “Ball of Confusion” was added but with the USA Mix too (not the UK Mix as on the 12″) and the track “If There’s A Heaven Above” had the Canada Mix in place of the original album… Read more »

In 2017 Daniel, Kevin and Kevin’s daughter (David J’s niece for those keeping score) played a handful of shows on the West Coast as Poptone. The sets consisted of ~70% Tones On Tail songs (which have never been played live and David J wasn’t the bass player, hence Diva on bass) with L&R songs tossed in for good measure. This boot is passable enough to make you nostalgic and since the shows sold out in minutes, it’s maybe the only way to catch this lineup. I’ll leave the link up for a week or so. I can’t get off the floor because I’m in a deep bow to you Paul!! You just make my musical temperature rise!! I just love this record. I like what it says, but it’s the delivery and the trance it puts me in that is fantastic. I love when you bring the Gothic out on BTG!! I know the original, but to me, this is the definitive version. I am so thankful that it’s on your site. I do have it on a compilation, but I so love your sound Paul. “Paulity” as someone calls it and it is wondrous.… Read more »

Thanks for the upload. My favorite remains Yin And Yang & The Flowerpot man, a wicked track that merged so well in a Miami Vice episode it seemed, like many obscure alternative tracks from the 80s, made for it and the other way round.
