Liza Minnelli – Losing My Mind (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

“Losing My Mind” is a song written by Stephen Sondheim originally for the 1971 musical Follies for the character of a former showgirl, Sally Durant Plummer. The song became a popular top ten hit for singer and actress Liza Minnelli in 1989 on the UK Singles chart and in Europe. The song has been covered by many artists.

In the UK Singles Chart, the most successful version has been by American singer and actress Liza Minnelli, reaching number six. It was the lead single from her 1989 studio album, Results, produced by Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn. The 12″ release peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Maxi Singles Sales chart. It also peaked at number twenty-six on the American dance chart.

The Pet Shop Boys demo version of “Losing My Mind” (which has Neil Tennant singing the vocal) was later remixed and released as a B-side on the Pet Shop Boys’ single, “Jealousy”. This demo version contains a scream that Minnelli opted not to include on her release.

Didn’t listen to this album for ages. What a slick pop production by the PSB, masters of their craft. Not just the outstanding Losing my mind, great version of Love Pains, ok Twist In My Sobriety didn’t turn out that well as Tanita Tikarams, but her version of PSB Rent and especially Tonight Is Forever, wow, major coolness!

What a great Dance Track ! I remember I discovered at First that song as a “new on” from the PSB team in those years before being struggled by the fact that half of the album was made of covers … Anyway, the result was fantastic ! Apart of that, did you know Paul, that the US 12″ includes the “Ultimix Edit”, which, in fact is the full version !? The UK 12″ of “So sorry, I Said” included the “Ultimix”… which in fact in a shorter fade edit at 6 min 35 sec… The 7” Version of “Losing My… Read more »

When I heard of this collaboration my first thought was, what an odd combination, until I heard the fantastic result. That PSB synth bass line is the killer! Every mix great in it’s own way.
Paul it’s again wavs instead of 16bit flacs, you gettin’ sloppy lately, to much weed? LOL
Could you check, you got email from me?

Glad to see this Liza album get so much interest lately. I’ve always maintained that it’s one of the best female albums of the 80s. Producer & artist could not have been a more perfect pairing, and it certainly sets a specific mood from the very first blip of “I Want You Now” and doesn’t let up until the street sounds of “I Can’t Say Goodnight” fade out. However, after first hearing the album back in ’89 I’ve always been perplexed about the single choices and the hack mixes of those singles. With such superior tracks like “If There Was… Read more »

Hi Paul

Sorry to hijack this thread but have you seen the phenomenally good press release on https://www.georgemichael.com/

This is particularly good news because at the time when George passed, the family did say there wouldn’t be any releases of previously unreleased material.

Now that will all change!

Hope this was ok to post!

I just listened to it without reading anything and knew the pet shop boys were involved from only a few bars Interesting that I had never heard this even though it’s from my favourite pet shop boys time period.. The closer i listen it’s not their usual level of production excellence. The vocal is very compressed and soft through a channel phaser, also the master level seems down by like 3db. Your rips are master quality as usual Paul, so much so I can hear certain cues that made me think they phones this one in or just received the… Read more »

Results is exceptional and all of the work the Pet Shop Boys did on this campaign is simply off the scale! I love it all.

This track is awesome!

It would be amazing to hear the other 12 inch singles from this album.

Thank you!!!!

Thank you so much, that will be awesome.

It makes my mind boggle that a super-fan such as yourself can make faultless recordings yet the ‘professionals’ make a mess!

It just doesn’t make sense!

So thank you for your hard work!!!!

ooooooooh “it´s Liza with a z, not Lisa with an s” 🙂

LOVE the Pet Shop Boys and adore Liza so the three of them together is almost to much to take. Although I love “So Sorry I Said” even more, “Losing My Mind” is such a great dance track.
Never heard the Ultimixes, by the way. I only have the standard 12inch.

Great. Thank you, Paul.

I agree, it sounds like a show tune, however I think it would have been vastly better if it had been a proper duet between Neil and Liza. I thought this album really needed one good vocal collaboration to seal the deal, and they held back for whatever reason, (ego, contract?). I also think PSB should have released their own version “If There Was Love” a somewhat lost classic, which rivals I’m Not Scared, at the very least, on one of their further listening discs.

You’re such a class act Paul posting this incredible single by Ms. Liza!! Karen and I loved this version and the album it’s culled from. As Pet Shop Boys devotees, we thought it was a genius pairing. Oh those Boys and their “beat box tea party” productions that lavished disco sensibilities with haunting synths and melodies with a Broadway legend. Gosh Paul, you make our memories come back in gorgeous Technicolor and cinematic surround sound. What you do to us can’t be put into words, but it’s a major body ORGASM to say the least! I am thrilled to pieces… Read more »

Thanks Paul. I hear the new 3cd/dvd version of Results is kicking up a storm with fans. I have the 2005 cd/dvd. Wondering if I need all those remixes???

The new box set is a mixed Result at best. Full of bad vinyl rips, odd inclusions (eg un-official and non-era remixes which don’t fit and even a video for a track that was issued four years on from Results). Not to mention poor mastering, flimsy packaging. It’s like a really bad bootleg. Avoid it and stick with the 2005 edition which at the very least had decent packaging and consistent mastering.

Thank you Todd for your opinion on this Liza box set. You’ve made my decision for me as I will not purchase this. I really want a quality product and not something slipshod. Thank goodness we have our Paul in charge of beautiful vinyl rips. He cares so very much about the final result.

Sincerely,

Jeff
