Uptown Girls – (I Know) I’m Losing You ’89 (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989

-DjPaulT Recommended 12″

“(I Know) I’m Losing You” is a song originally recorded by The Temptations in 1966.

During the 1980s, on the Dallas, Texas-based Oak Lawn Records label, the song was covered by the group Uptown Girls and transformed into an upbeat dance tune. This version achieved popularity at Dallas’ famed Starck nightclub due to early play by DJ Rick Squillante and became a standard in many U.S. nightclubs, reaching the No. 80 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987.

Hi Paul,

I loved this song in the 80s. I had the 12″ of the original version (silver label, black lettering) when they were just called Uptown from around 1983. Any chance you would ever rip that version on here?

Thanks,
Doug

Having listened to this now, I definitely only knew the Ultimix Version. It’s with the original vocal.

I’m not sure what the 1989 Remix is but it’s NOT just a remix — it’s a different vocal — either a different person on lead or the same person singing in a VERY subdued manner.

The original vocal on the Ultimix Version is passionate & soulful.

The ’89 one … errr … isn’t!

🙂

I prefer the original vocal. Give it to me with some stank on it!

I loved this song!

It sort of came & went and was forgotten.

I was learning keyboard at the time and picked out much of it on the synthesiser!

The good old days …

They were good.

They were old.

They were days.

🙂

Probably my first encounter with this track, it’s easy to understand why it was popular in the clubs. The drum beats strongly remind me of Afrika Bambaataas Looking for the Perfect Beat. Shame the Ultimix boys didn’t elaborate more on the drum arrangement, basically is just to loops all track long, (I Know) I’m Losing You could have been a much bigger club stomper!

Whenever I see one of your postings containing something by Les and Brad, I always perk right up. I mean, the boys from Ultimix can do no wrong in my book. And this release is another living and breathing entity that showcases their talents. What a treat this 12-inch is!! I love the Oak Lawn catalog for one thing as all their releases are very, very special. It’s also great because you have given us the full 12-inch with all the cool versions by this band. Thanks so much Paul for your recommended 12-inches. Have a marvelous and enjoyable weekend!!… Read more »
