BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987
“Don’t Look Any Further” is a 1984 single by former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards, featuring Siedah Garrett. The single was written by Franne Golde, Dennis Lambert and Duane Hitchings. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Black Singles chart and peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, the song peaked at #45. Guitar, bass and drum programming is by Paul Jackson, Jr.
The music video for the song has been described as “what … might be the worst video ever”.
However, given the rudimentary style of video making utilized at the time, many believe that the video was of, at least, moderate quality. Despite its simplicity, some early video aficionados descride the video as “awesomely terrible”. Regardless of how critics view this video, most agree that it is visual accompaniment for one of the greatest soul songs of the 1980s.

Dennis died just one day before his 75th birthday: http://www.tmz.com/2018/02/02/temptations-lead-singer-dennis-edwards-dead-at-74/
Rest in peace, Dennis!
Amazing song, club classic, the drums, percussions and bassline sound awesome on a big club PA sytem! Incredible how little they changed the arrangement of the new mix and how much better the song now sounds! Since they removed the aggresive snare from the original mix the song is much cooler and sexier. I use to play this with Joyce Sims – Come Into My Life and Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing, and watch the ladies sway on the dancefloor…
Thank you so much for this! In 2011, all three mixes were finally released on an expanded CD of the Don’t Look Any Further album, and I didn’t think it sounded too bad, but upon hearing your vinyl rip, it’s shocking how inferior the CD sounds. It’s not a big difference in dynamic range, but more just the EQ. When you listen to them side-by-side, the CD is “dull and lifeless” as people like to say. Whoever mastered the 12″ did it right.
Thank you so much DJ Paul – I am a long time fan, you have an incredible collection of impossible to find music. “Don’t Look Any Further” is such a GREAT SONG! It always makes me feel good – hearing that bass makes me smile, and the world is all right. Thank you for sharing 🙂
I like this one , and never had the Instrumental before …. Many thanks
Thanks for this. Here in Germany I only knew this song so far performed by The Kane Gang in 1987, which hit No. 1 in US Dance Charts. One of the few songs being released in the same year by different artists.
Italy, mid-80’s, mid-summer, late in the evening, half-emptied pizzeria-terras serves a discotheque looking out at the sea with nothing in between than just the almost empty beach. Soft evening breeze filled with after-sun-lotions, perfumes, tabacco, and the odd reefer smoke drifting by from somewhere along the beach. Loud music, with a great vibe and good people around. This instrumental was played daily, as a communal thing, the Italians forming a circle, enjoying all and everything for a few slow-tempo-ed tunes. This instrumental was played all summer nights, and the next year’s it just got to share the nights with the… Read more »
Oh right – William Pitt’s “City Lights“. I have that one, too.
Wonderful song. I rediscovered it earlier this year when I transfered my files with Ben Liebrand remixes from one hard disk to another. DLAF was the starting song in one of his many brilliant “IN THE MIX” mixes. I actually could not say whether I knew the original 12inch mix – the ´new remix´ is more common, I suppose. And as Jeff points out the hypnotic rhythm was used by many remixers back then. I just love it. It´s cool, the bass line is awesome. My subwoofer makes my wine glasses sing and dance 🙂 Love and hugs from the… Read more »
Classic 80’s soul indeed. I can’t say I remember the video though.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome junior 🙂
Thanks Paul!
Although originally released in 1984 is this then a new remix from 1987?
Yes this 12″ was released in 1987 with the original and new remix 🙂
Thanks Paul! Awesome addition and great song! Loving it!
Thank you Paul. I always loved this song. Great classic.
You’re welcome Daniel 🙂
I love this song Paul!! One of my favorites too. Didn’t know about the remix, but now that’s quite the bonus. Hey, just trying to think for a moment, but isn’t the percussion line on this song the “Mother” of a lot of records, like P.M. Dawn, Milli Vanilli and Enigma? I tend to think it is. Either way, this is a classic.
Thanks very much!
Jeff
You’re welcome Jeff. It was also sampled by the following: The 1986 single “City Lights” by William Pitt, which was European hit, uses the same bassline and chord structure. The first well-known sample of the song’s distinctive bassline is in Eric B. & Rakim’s 1987 single “Paid in Full”. 2Pac’s song “Hit ‘Em Up”, from his 1998 compilation album Greatest Hits, also samples “Don’t Look Any Further”. The ‘Don’t Look Any Further Remix’ of the song “Unpretty” by R&B girl group TLC heavily samples the song. The Notorious B.I.G. and Junior Mafia also sample “Don’t Look Any Further” for their… Read more »

Jeff
No Jeff, the drum loop you mean is from
The Soul Searchers – Ashley’s Roachclip (1974)
Sample appears at 3:32

Many thanks Davos Via 45. I love being schooled on such things. Paul’s site has the best educators around!!
Have a nice day!
Jeff
No, the distinction of “worst video ever” is still firmly held by Mick Jagger and David Bowie’s Dancing In the Street. 😉
Agree they are both pretty bad.
Please. They went through the trouble of filming Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett in front of a green screen, but nevertheless it was decided to color-key them – badly – on to a crappy still picture, seemingly taken from a cheap poster. Jagger and Bowie got to move around a bit on location at least.
Don’t Look Any Further wins hands down…
