BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
“Oh L’amour” is a song by English synthpop duo Erasure, released in April 1986 as their third single.
It was issued by Mute Records in the UK and Sire Records in the U.S. to herald the June release of Erasure’s debut album Wonderland, but became the third consecutive commercial failure for the band in both territories. Despite its low chart placing, “Oh L’amour” has proven to be one of Erasure’s signature songs, due to its popularity in dance clubs. It remains a favourite among fans, particularly when performed live.
The single reached #86 on the UK singles chart and #3 US dance chart.
First pressings came with a Thomas the Tank Engine logo on the back cover, which was withdrawn due to legal issues.
In Germany the 12″ was released including an ultra rare German version which featured vocals by Susanne Störrle.

The very first time I listened to Oh, L’amour! on the radio was in 1988. Since then, I am another fan.
I never noticed that it never charted as the song got heavy airplay on local radio stations. Must be the many followers of Vince Clark’s work since Depeche Mode’s Speak & Spell album that just enjoyed the song and album as I did. Both extended mixes, the PWL and the Re-Mix from the regular 12″, are pretty good, it’s just so a catchy song! I never got into Erasure much even though I tried. That Gimme ! Gimme ! Gimme ! cover is fantastic though. That is what a 12″ should be ! Man the dynamics and bassline have legs and that melodic whistle hook that Madonna ripped with “Hung Up” still gives me tingles.

It was massive in clubs here in the USA I never understood why it didn’t become a mainstream hit for them.
Wow! I’ve never heard the German version before! Also… Oh L’Amour (PWL Funky Sisters Say ‘Ooh La La’ Mix) is one of the greatest remixes ever. That’s the first time I ever heard Erasure, it was that remix on the radio back in 1986. Fell in love instantly. I remember thinking “oh cool, Vince Clarke found someone that sounds just like Alison Moyet. Andy Bell was new to me. And he does! I thought it was Alison Moyet singing at first,the first time I heard it.
My first introduction to Erasure was 1987 I think. They opened for Duran Duran during their Strange Behaviour Tour. My mind was blown 🙂

You’ve made Karen’s and my day with this song by Erasure, Paul!! We’re such big fans and I know we don’t really know as much as you and your readers do about them and all their releases. It’s funny, but I remember this song first by Dollar and then by Erasure. Very interesting. I’m just so happy to hear a 12-inch by them under your strict “rules of ripping.” It’s gonna be so good!!
