a-ha – I’ve Been Losing You (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“I’ve Been Losing You” is a song by Norwegian band A-ha. It was the first single taken from their 1986 Scoundrel Days album. It reached number one in Norway and number eight in the UK. It achieved worldwide sales of over 1.1 million copies.

The music video was shot in a wide arena in Los Angeles.

“This Alone Is Love” was the B-side, in an earlier, rawer form than the one that was re-recorded for Stay on These Roads. Both versions can be easily differentiated by their duration and the use of certain instruments. The earlier version is notable for its organ solo that sets in at 3:36 until the end of the song. The Scoundrel Days version is notable for its guitar solo. It is derived from a song by Waaktaar and Furuholmen’s previous band Bridges.

another underrated band here in america, they had more than a couple of hits everywhere else. however, that being said, this is a not a great remix, or single. in fact, this whole album was a huge disappointment, and most of the singles were very boring to me. the one exception was ‘manhattan skyline’ is amazing, and well done. ‘cry wolf’ is another average song, along with this one. their attempt to mix guitars into their sound didn’t work, until much later on their further album. i think the fact they were following up on the massive success of ‘hunting… Read more »

I must say that I already had the two versions of “I’ve Been Losing You” in different CDs but as always, I did not lose the opportunity to check the b-side and once again I found a pleasant surprise. I love this early version of “This Alone Is Love” that seems more like a remix compared to the more “conservative” version that was included in the later album. Thank you so much for the share, DjPaulT!

Fantastic post. It made me re-evulate your A-ha! posts to date. Curiously we’ve had all 4 A-ha posts between Janaury – March and all two or three years apart. How about an A-ha! week?!!!

Thanks, Paul. I had this 12″ just before seeing a-ha at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, VA (1986) on the Hunting High & Low tour (brought to you by Agree Shampoo and Conditioner — I was looking at the tour programme last weekend). Loved these versions…as well as Cry Wolf and the very underrated Manhattan Skyline. I appreciate you helping the 80s & 90s live on.

Great start into February. I need all the moral support I can get this month as my birthday approaches. An annoyingly high round figure it will be 🙂 Be that as it may, such a brilliant song from such a brilliant album. Scoundrel Days is by far my favourite a-ha album. Three great singles on it, and “Scoundrel Days”, “The Swing Of Things” or “The Weight Of The Wind” could have been single hits as well. I LOVE “Losing You”. Funnily enough, only three or four hours ago on my way home from work I listened to my own re-edit… Read more »

As well, the b-side here, This Alone Is Love is a different version to the one that appeared on the following album. It is, in my opinion, the superior version.
