Thomas Dolby – Hyper-active! (Heavy Breather Subversion) (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“Hyperactive!” is a single by British musician Thomas Dolby, taken from his second album The Flat Earth, released in 1984. Additional vocals were provided by Louise Ulfstedt.

According to Thomas Dolby, he initially composed the song for Michael Jackson, whom he met in 1982. He decided to record it by himself since he never got any feedback from Jackson after sending him a demo tape.

It was the first single to be taken from the album and peaked at #17 on the UK Singles Chart and #16 on the Canadian RPM Magazine charts, but only reached #62 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In 2017, the song was featured over the second episode closing credits of the FX series Legion.

Again, you teach me something I didn’t know. Michael Jackson passed this up? Maybe it never reached him to listen to it. Absolute corker – thanks Paul!

paul, another one of my all-time favorite music artists. i have been a fan of his since his first album, many collaborations, and soundtracks. he is still going on, even today. ‘hyperactive’ is an awesome song, and while the remix is good, it should have been longer, and more variety. the next single ‘dissident’s’ remixes eclipses this in every way possible. the last single ‘i scare myself’ is a joke, and a waste, although the b-side, ‘puppet theater’ is a classic in itself, as it borrows from whodini’s – magic wand song. there are 3 more versions of ‘get out… Read more »

Lol at the idea of MJ just tossing the cassette in the trash and not even replying. I wonder if he did actually even hear it? It might not have even reached him.

Don’t think the song was quite right for him when you think of MJ’s output during that period, but can totally imagine his vocal singing it.

I love this Thomas Dolby album cover. Great hair! I havent had time to comment this week until now. But want to look back on the week and say a few things. GREAT STUFF! 1. The Human League post was exciting, “The Sound Of The Crowd” is one of my faves! 2. Xymox – Obession.I have that 12″ and it’s one of my faves. I did write a comment on that post. 3. Eurythmics – Sex Crime (1984) I had this on cassette back in the 80’s and love the entire album. I actually like this remix. 4. Cabaret Voltaire… Read more »

What a song, what a video, what a powerful 12inch version although it´s two minutes too short. Just great. I have a different edition with the boring 7inch version and the WONDERFUL WONDERFUL “White City” as b-side tracks.
Mr Dolby is so underrated. You all have to watch his bootleg live videos on U2b. He is a great story teller, as well. I always nearly wet myself when he tells the story of “Science. Science? SCIENCE!” 🙂

A lovely weekend to all of you music lovers.

Thanks Paul. The 12” was far better than the 7”. He should’ve used the intro of the 12” on the 7” as well.

It doesn’t get any better than this song, Paul!! My goodness, this week has me in such a state of stimulation, I mean, even more than last week, which was beyond great, but this has been a week of personal highlights for me, because so many of this week has so many personal favorites. My gosh, BTG is like musical Viagra or Cialis and I’m feeling the rush in every fiber of my being!! This song is so fierce!! I remember loving the video to this way back when, watching it with my infant cousin and she seemed mesmerized by… Read more »

Yeah, totally agree! Unfortunately Thomas Dolby is one of the most underrated artists in the world. Most people know him for his biggest hit “She Blinded Me With Science” but ignores the rest of his fine work. Paradoxically, being one of the pioneers of synthpop, it is not even mentioned in the historical documentary of the BBC “Synth Britannia” (WTF?). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK1P93r9xes

Fully agree Walter C concerning how the Industry ignores Mr. Dolby’s contributions. I’m just so glad that Paul has been a refuge for underappreciated artists. Because of him musical legacies are valued and rescued from oblivion. Burning The Ground does so much on various levels that one can’t help but be uplifted by Paul’s attention and admiration to favorites known and/or soon-to-be known!! His is a digital domain worth celebrating for its dedication and love!!

Enjoy your day and weekend Walter C and the community here!!
