Georgio – Lover’s Lane (Europe 12″) (1987)

Burning The Ground Exclusive

Released in 1987, “Lover’s Lane” by Georgio became one of the standout singles from his debut album Sex Appeal. Issued on Motown Records, the track perfectly captured the sleek, synth-driven Minneapolis funk sound that was dominating dance floors in the mid-to-late 1980s.

A Minneapolis, Minnesota native, Georgio emerged during the era when the so-called “Minneapolis Sound”—popularized by artists like Prince and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis—was reshaping R&B and dance music. Blending crisp drum machines, glossy synthesizers, and sensual vocals, “Lovers Lane” delivered a smooth yet club-ready groove that resonated strongly with DJs and dance audiences.

The single became Georgio’s biggest hit, climbing to #2 on the dance chart published by Billboard, while also crossing over to #26 on the R&B chart and #59 on the Billboard Hot 100. With this success, “Lover’s Lane” marked Georgio’s third consecutive Top 10 entry on the Billboard Dance Chart, further establishing him as one of the era’s notable club music artists.

Driven by its hypnotic rhythm and seductive atmosphere, “Lover’s Lane” remains a prime example of late-’80s Motown venturing into the contemporary dance and electro-funk landscape. The song’s shimmering production and romantic late-night vibe helped it become a favorite in clubs and on mix shows, solidifying Georgio’s place in the dance music scene of the decade.

Today, “Lover’s Lane” stands as a reminder of a time when Motown was embracing the electronic pulse of the dance floor—delivering sophisticated grooves that kept DJs spinning and dancers moving well into the night.

Partland Brothers – Soul City (US 12″) (1987)

Burning The Ground Exclusive

Hitting That Sweet Spot of Pop-Rock

In 1986, The Partland Brothers—Chris and G.P.—emerged from Colgan, Ontario, into the bigger world of Toronto’s music scene. Their debut album Electric Honey featured “Soul City,” an anthemic pop-rock track that became their defining moment, earning a spot in the Top 30 in Canada and climbing to No. 27 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100—making them true bona fide chart-hitters from the get-go.

Harmony & Production Worthy of Righteous Praise

What set “Soul City” apart was the duo’s intoxicating close-harmony vocals—drawing frequent comparisons to a modernized version of The Righteous Brothers. The production by Vini Poncia (known for working with McCartney, Lennon, Kiss, and more) polished the sound to gleaming perfection, ensuring their launch had all the hallmarks of a major new act.

Lyrics That Breathe Freedom and Adventure

At its heart, “Soul City” is about breaking free from the mundane—the thrill of the unknown. Lines like:

“Soul City, that’s where we’re heading
Dancing and singing ’til dawn…”

…paint a vivid picture of escapism, nightlife energy, and living without boundaries. The song urges listeners to step “into the moonlight,” chase the setting sun, and discover that state of mind—someone’s own Soul City—full of euphoria and possibility.

From Contest Winners to International Stages

Before the breakthrough, the brothers honed their chops in bands like Oliver Heaviside and even won the Q107 radio station’s Homegrown contest in 1983—an early spark that lit their path to Capitol Records in 1985. Following the release of Soul City, they toured with legends like The Moody Blues and The Beach Boys, and graced TV stages like American Bandstand and The Late Show with Arsenio Hall. They were also recognized at home with a Juno Awards nomination for Most Promising New Group in 1987.

A Brief Blaze, with Enduring Echo

Though “Soul City” remains their singular U.S. chart entry, its success opened doors—yet management setbacks delayed follow-ups. They released a handful of albums afterward (including Between Worlds in 1990 and Part Land, Part Water in 1993), but none reached the same heights.

Even so, the Partland Brothers persevered: backing music legend Ronnie Hawkins on stage and continuing to create and perform—even amidst personal challenges, like G.P.’s accident in recent years.

Final Thoughts

“Soul City” encapsulates that irresistible 1980s spirit—hopeful, escapist, and dance-fueled. With soaring harmonies, infectious rhythms, and lyrical zest, it’s not just a song—but an invitation: chase your soul’s ideal city, wherever music and freedom roam.

Whether you’re revisiting this gem or discovering it anew, “Soul City” stands timeless—for those who long to dance until dawn, live beyond the lines, and dare to follow the lights into the next great adventure.

Edgar Winter – Frankenstein 1984 (US 12″ Promo)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1983

Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein ’84” is a reimagined version of his classic instrumental hit, Frankenstein, originally released in 1972. The 1984 version takes the rock instrumental to a new level by incorporating the synthesizer-heavy sound that had grown popular in the 80s. This updated version brings an electronic twist to the original’s signature guitar and keyboard riffs, adding a bit of synth-pop flair to the song while maintaining its hard rock roots.

While the original Frankenstein is famous for its progressive rock elements and complex arrangement (including a memorable drum solo), Frankenstein ’84 leans into a mix of rock and 80s electronic elements, blending synthesizers with heavy guitar and electronic drums. This remake underscores Winter’s versatility and his ability to innovate across genres, showcasing his musical skills in guitar, saxophone, and synthesizer.

The Frankenstein ’84 remix didn’t achieve the same chart-topping success as the original Frankenstein, which had been a major hit in 1973, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the most iconic rock instrumentals of its time. Despite its innovative remix production and appeal within 80s dance scenes, Frankenstein ’84 was more of a cult favorite than a chart hit.

While the remix breathed new life into the classic, introducing it to a younger, more dance-oriented audience, it didn’t chart significantly in the U.S. or internationally. However, Frankenstein ’84 maintained a presence on 12” singles and in clubs, where extended and remixed versions of popular songs were frequently played. This version became popular among fans of Edgar Winter and the synth-heavy remix styles of the era, securing a legacy as a unique 80s reinterpretation of a 70s rock classic.

The music video for Frankenstein ’84 embraced the energetic and experimental spirit of the 80s, mirroring the song’s transformation into a danceable, synth-driven rock piece. In the video, Edgar Winter plays a prominent role, performing his famous synthesizer riffs and saxophone solos with a futuristic edge. The visuals are full of 80s flair, with neon lighting, strobe effects, and a surreal, almost sci-fi aesthetic that complements the track’s title and its Frankenstein theme.

Set against a dramatic, dark backdrop with flashes of color, the video has a Frankenstein-esque lab atmosphere. Winter is often shown surrounded by synthesizers, drum machines, and flashing lights, emphasizing the remix’s electronic makeover. The production leans heavily on visual effects that feel both eerie and futuristic, capturing the transformation of the original rock classic into an electrifying 80s remix.

The video reflects Edgar Winter’s eccentric style and adds an element of theatricality to the song, aligning with the era’s tendency to produce visually experimental music videos. This visual style helped to promote the remix to a new generation and allowed Winter’s eclectic musical persona to shine.

For this release, I have created custom artwork.
