Re-Rip Newly Remastered!

Originally I posted this one on June 2, 2010. But for those who may have missed it or if you are a new reader just discovering BTG. I decided to give this one a new rip with my newer Ortofon Super 30 stylus. This 12″ is also being posted in 24 bit flac for the very first time!

“Sonic Boom Boy” is the debut single by British three-piece pop/rock band Westworld. Named after the sci-fi film Westworld, they were formed in 1986 by former Generation X guitarist Bob “Derwood” Andrews and American vocalist Elizabeth Westwood. The line up was completed by drummer Nick Burton. In the UK “Sonic Boom Boy” was a top 20 hit peaking at #11 while in the US the song reached #42 on the Billboard Hot Dance chart.

This UK 12″ is an early indie test pressing and features alternate tracks than what appeared on the domestic 12″ releases. The front cover, inner sleeve and labels are all hand painted. Making this 12″ a very rare and unique item.

Great post, many thanks. A sadly overlooked band who had some brilliant remixes and bonus tracks over their career, most are worth tracking down.

You might be interested to know that with this debut release the band used to take them into the megastores in London and just put them on display with the intention that people could just take them for free.

Thanks Paul for re-upping this one – a couple of (nice) extra WW tracks I didn’t have before. Hedgie hits the nail on the head for me. A great band, with fantastic guitar playing from Bob ‘Derwood’ Andrews of Gen X (prior) fame. They did indeed have some great 12″ mixes – most of them were very short (around the 4 min mark) but they packed a lot of fun ideas into those short spaces. I’m hoping a reissue label like Cherry Red or Edsel might be tempted one day to issue deluxe expanded editions of the 3 albums –… Read more »

I have the CD that this song was released on…different version of course but still really good. Another song called “Painkiller” from this album got a lot of airplay from a local radio station back in the day. Too bad it was never released as a single because I think it’s a better song.

Wow you ain’t kidding. What a great alternative take. Sounds like a polished Demo. Simlar but different to the UK Single version. They showed such promise – this (their debut i think, certainly debut hit) went up in the UK chart from around 29-11 one week and i was convinced it was set to be a UK number one single 1-2 weeks later. It fell the next week which was pretty much unheard of. They never even made the UK top 10 EVER despite great follow-ups. A real shame!

I too was always baffled by the lack of success they had.

3 solid singles and an in-your-face cartoon image – there’s no reason why it shouldn’t have worked. I think there’s a Westworld conspiracy somewhere….

Grabbed this last time but will sure grab it again. 🙂
