The Blow Monkeys – It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1987

TOTALLY OBSCURE 80s!

“It Doesn’t Have to Be this Way” is a single released by British band The Blow Monkeys in early 1987. It is one of the band’s best known singles, and hit the top 5 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was featured in the 1987 comedy film Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.

Even though the single charted internationally in the United States the single failed to chart giving it a Totally Obscure 80s placement in that country.

Hi Paul. In my country this one was a big hit in the 80s, so not totally obscure. Even nowadays you can listen to it in the local FM radios.

Love, love, love this song and love the Blow Monkeys that first album in particular is immaculate – one of the few “perfect” records I have, really. If you were to post any more Blow Monkeys in the future, I’d be joyful!

One of my favourite singles in 1987. I liked the earlier single Digging Your Scene by them too.

Thanks for this, Paul 🙂

Thank you very much Paul. Blow Monkeys is one of my favorite bands. It has many similarities to The Style Council (another favorite of mine) I hope to see more 12″ versions of these bands on your page. Best regards

It is with immense gratitude I have for you Paul posting this Blow Monkeys’ single. I have really been getting into them as of late and it’s a huge thrill for me that you’re putting this out on your site!!! I love this sort of “sophisticated pop” that’s a lot different from the norm. Thank you heaps Paul!!!

Have a great weekend Paul and Song And Dance, Fred, Daniel, Retro Hound and all the rest!!!!

You are so right about hearing Janet Jackson’s “Nasty” within the drum machine breaks!! Absolutely incredible!! I love the New Jack Swing feel of the record too! Gosh, I love the 80’s so much!! This is so melodramatic and I have a thing for backing female vocalists!! I am in Heaven when it comes to The Blow Monkeys!! I really feel I have to play catch up with their discography now! Thank you Paul for introducing me to this song!! It was an excellent week for music!!

Mad Love!

Thanks a lot for this one. I always loved the ennui in the vocals, a boredom which seemed to be imitated by Blur a decade later.
