“Manic Monday” is a song by the American pop rock band The Bangles, and the first single released from their second studio album, Different Light (1986). It was written by American musician Prince, using the pseudonym “Christopher”. Originally intended for the group Apollonia 6 in 1984, he offered the song to The Bangles two years later. Lyrically, it describes a woman who is waking up to go to work on Monday, wishing it were still Sunday where she could relax.

The song, which was released on Monday January 27, 1986, by Columbia Records, received generally positive reviews from music critics and some comparisons with The Mamas & the Papas’ “Monday, Monday”. It became The Bangles’ first hit.

“Manic Monday” debuted at number eighty-six on the Billboard Hot 100, on the week ending January 25, 1986, and reached a peak of number two, on the issue dated April 19, 1986, being blocked from the top of the chart by Prince and the Revolution’s single “Kiss”. In the United Kingdom “Manic Monday” debuted at number eighty-five on February 8, 1986, and entered the top forty, at number twenty-four, on February 22, 1986. The song eventually reached its peak position, at number two, the next month. In Germany, the single debuted at number twenty-nine on March 17, 1986, reaching the top ten in the next three weeks, and its peak, also at number two, on April 14, 1986, where it stayed two weeks. It remained in the top ten for four more weeks leaving the charts on July 20, 1986.

In Switzerland “Manic Monday” debuted at number twelve on March 30, 1986, becoming the highest debut of the week. It reached its peak two weeks later at number four, where it remained another week. In the Netherlands, the single debuted at number forty-three on February 22, 1986; and managed to reach the number twenty-four. It stayed on the chart for seven weeks. In Norway, “Manic Monday” debuted at number nine in the tenth week of 1986, becoming the second highest debut of the week. It also reached the number four two weeks later, where it stayed another two. The song also peaked within the top five in the Austrian, the Irish, and the New Zealand charts.

Prince has used the pseudonym “Christopher” only one time for writing credits of ‘Manic Monday’.

It’s a reference to “Christopher Tracy,” a character he played in the motion picture ‘Under The Cherry Moon’ (1986) although he never used the full name ‘Christopher Tracy’ as a writing or production alter ego.

Bangles – Hazy Shade Of Winter (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

A. Front

“A Hazy Shade of Winter” is a song by American music duo Simon & Garfunkel, originally released on October 22, 1966.

In 1987, The Bangles recorded a cover version of the song for the Less Than Zero soundtrack; that version peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Their cover, simply titled “Hazy Shade of Winter,” was a harder-edged rock song that removed most of the bridge section. The record, like the rest of the soundtrack album, was produced by Rick Rubin. After a fruitful but disappointing experience with the producer of their Different Light album, David Kahne, where they were given little input in the production of the songs, the group decided to take more control for the recording of this song, and they were given an additional producer credit. Michael Steele later commented that “we sounded the most on this record the way we actually sound live”, and that “If we hadn’t been so messed up as a band, it could have been a turning point for us.”

Lead vocals were performed jointly by all four members of the group, with a short solo led by Susanna Hoffs towards the end of the song. This was a rare occurrence in the Bangles songs, as they mostly had just one member singing lead on their songs. Due to pressure from their record label, The Bangles removed the verse from the original song that contained the line “drinking my vodka and lime.” According to liner notes on the Soundtrack album, Steve Bartek from the band Oingo Boingo played guitar on the track.

When released as a single in November 1987, “Hazy Shade of Winter” became a huge hit, surpassing the popularity of the original version, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, only behind “Could’ve Been” by Tiffany, and also #11 in the UK. It was also a hit around Europe.

The music video for the song featured the band singing in a studio surrounded by television screens on the walls, similar to a scene of the Less Than Zero film. Scenes of the film also appear throughout the video.

“Hazy Shade of Winter” was not included on any of the band’s studio albums, but was later included on the band’s first official Greatest Hits in 1990, and on many of the band’s subsequent compilations. The accompanying Greatest Hits video compilation did not feature the “Hazy Shade of Winter” video, due to complications with the licensing of the movie rights of the Less Than Zero scenes that appear on the video clip.

The Bangles version was commonly used as bumper music for late night radio talk show Coast to Coast AM hosted by Art Bell in the mid to late 1990s.
