Ric Ocasek – Emotion In Motion (US 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“Emotion in Motion” is a song by Ric Ocasek, the main songwriter and lead vocalist for The Cars. It was featured on his second solo album, This Side of Paradise, and released as a single in late 1986. The tune topped the Album Rock Tracks chart and reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Ocasek’s only U.S. top 40 hit as a solo artist. In Australia, the song peaked at #8 on the Kent Music Report.

Ocasek was a founding member, lead singer and principal songwriter of the new wave rock band The Cars. Following the group’s 1985 Greatest Hits release, its members split up to pursue solo projects. Lead guitarist Elliot Easton released a solo album in 1985, and both Ocasek and singer/bassist Benjamin Orr did the same in 1986. Just as “Emotion in Motion” was Ocasek’s only solo song to reach the Top 40, Orr’s “Stay the Night” was the latter’s only solo Top 40 hit.

The band reunited to record 1987’s Door to Door, which produced “You Are the Girl”, the group’s last Top 40 single.

His last big hit, with a little help from the Tears For Fears crew, so there is definitely new wave in there somwhere.

hi paul, glad to see a solo project from the cars lead singer. i always wondered why anyone thinks they are new wave, i’ve heard them back in the late 70’s and they were definitely a fusion of rock, punk and later somewhat alternative rock. they have all of 1 12 inch single, and never cared for doing mixes, and have a few b-sides, so they were never part of the 80’s music culture. they might have tried to look like a new wave band in the late 80’s with heartbeat city, but thats it. they are almost never on… Read more »

The Cars were such a fantastic band! They got their credit back in the day but these days they are so under-credited/rated for the amount of hits they produced in 7+ years. If you like The Cars at all, do yourself a favor and buy their 1985 compilation (which I own): https://www.discogs.com/The-Cars-Greatest-Hits/master/69626 or the 2002 larger compilation: https://www.discogs.com/The-Cars-Complete-Greatest-Hits/master/247669 (I do not own but know most of the additional songs). Both are $12 on Amazon. I think their hit, Magic, is my favorite…it still flashes me back to 1984 in the living room of my house. Released in May it was… Read more »

As a lover of The Cars, I so appreciate these solo singles you’ve given us Paul. It’s a godsend that you exist for all the care you showcase. Hey, if it wasn’t for you, we all wouldn’t have the “Hello Again (Dub Version)” in our possession. The re-issue sadly left it off. You’re the best!

Oh isn´t it a wonderful song. Such a sweet melody, such sweet singing with Ric´s awkward singing voice. Awkward in a nice way 🙂
I have the 12inch which features the longer album version if I remember correctly. Have to chekc that.

Lovely, Paul. Thank you. And the sound quality… Do I have to say it? 🙂
