BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
Originally posted February 13, 2012
“Love Comes Quickly” is a song by UK synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys, released as the third single from their 1986 debut album Please, and the last of its singles to be released before the album itself. Although a Top 20 hit in the UK and cited as one the band’s own favorite songs, its chart performance was disappointing given that it followed the worldwide number one “West End Girls”. It peaked at number 19 in the UK in March 1986.
The song is about the inevitability of falling in love, even for those who deliberately shun the idea.
Producer Stephen Hague receives a co-writing credit for writing the first two chords of the middle section of the song. Andy Mackay of Roxy Music plays the saxophone parts towards the end of the song.
As with “Opportunities”, the 12″ version of the single contains remixes by 1980s producer Shep Pettibone. The remixes of “Love Comes Quickly” and “That’s My Impression” reached the top ten on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in October 1986. Later, in 2003, new remixes by Blank & Jones were produced for the promotion of the singles collection PopArt.
The cover, featuring Chris Lowe in a baseball cap emblazoned with “BOY” in block letters, has become an iconic Pet Shop Boys image. Neil Tennant of the duo later recollected that he had expected the image of the cap to be the group’s coming out moment, calling it “incredibly gay”.
Directed by Andy Morahan and Eric Watson, the video to the song is very simple, utilizing facial shots of Tennant singing, interposed with blurry montages of the faces of various other people; at points, shots of Lowe, lying on top of a construction of a square grid, are superimposed over these shots. Watson would later call it a “complete disaster”.

One of my absolute favourite PSB tracks – thanks Paul!!!
Thank You Paul for another great PSB post.
Thanks for this post Paul. One of my favorites. I want to mention that the new reissues of the Pet Shop Boys albums are indeed just reissues of the 2001 reissues. And they did not add any extra’s on it. But what I am excited about is the fact that the new remastered sound is indeed an improvement over the 2001 reissues. And for me that alone is reason to re-buy them. They really do sound that good, imo. Perhaps they will release a singles box set in the future with all edits, remixes, b-sides and dub version. Wouldn’t that… Read more »
paul,
nice to see you back, and picking up with the great hits.
although not as upbeat as the other singles, a more midtempo track,
kind of like west end girls. i actually like this track a lot better,
and was surprised to see there were mixes of it.
that was one good thing about the pet shop boys, they didn’t just
extend the dance tracks.
another classic, from their best era.

OMG – I’ve just found that someone’s managed to get hold of original PSBs 8″ Fairlight floppy disks, programmed for a tour that never happened, around the time of the first album. They hold sequences for loads of early tracks:
Here’s a half finished Love Come Quickly:

Incredible!

Wow! This sounds incredible – thank you so much.
Thank you Steve 🙂
I remember when I first heard this song, thinking that I had never heard anything like it before. It really has a quality that transports you to another world, a kind of aural escapism. I believe this was the first PSB 12″ I ever bought. Thank you for the excellent rip. It is a shame they did not do anything more for the recent re-issues, or even correct any of the errors in the mix variations etc. Apparently as I read they are only more compressed. However to those that missed out, it is good they are available. I still… Read more »
I agree Joey these records in mint condition are getting very hard to find. I treasure and love the ones that I have 🙂
Incredible Paul, the first record i ever bought was Disco. Loved those remixes to death. Took me years to figure out it actually meant [Italo] Disco and The saxophone part is played by Andy McKay from Roxy Music. Also been on a personal journey to deconstruct a lot of Pet Shop Boy tracks. Im pretty sure the lead and effects were done on a E-mu Emulator II and sampled into a Fairlight CMI and sequenced. I found this very cute video pre effect racks. https://youtu.be/3oskiJR3W1Y PS: got any more Art of Noise ? I was Hoping “Moments in Love” would… Read more »
Very cool video Kaex thanks for sharing. I had so many singles with “Love” in the title I just did not get around to all of them. Maybe the Art Of Noise track will show up next time 🙂
One of the greatest PSB singlest, so understaded and cool.
Have you ever saw PSBs live Paul? I guess they don’t go to America that often?
I have never seen them live Jermajesty. I’m not sure why they don’t tour the U.S. other bands like Erasure do so I am sure PSB would sell out venues.
Thanks a lot for the new transfer.
You’re welcome Marko 🙂
This happy/sad song makes me feel in the same way when I was a lonely and disconcerted teenager trying to find a way to fit in the world.
Love your rip.
Beautiful remaster.
Thank you sooooo much.
Thank you, Alberto. I felt the exact same way this was my soundtrack 🙂
I love that song so much. It comes near to what I consider THE perfect pop ballad. Adorable, lovely, awesome. It´s only been a couple of years that I got hold of this 12inch with its rare dub mix. Love it, just love it.
I was SO disappointed back then in 1999 that they did not include LCQ on their fabulous Nightlife tour. Their concert was almost perfect – I guess I would still be in a trance had they included Love Comes Quickly.
This song ranks up there in my top 5 of the greatest 80s song. I wore the cassette of “PLEASE” out when I was a fedglingl boy figuring out myself and the crazy world around me. 🙂
Thanks Paul. Love this mix.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
And my heart always starts to beat a bit faster when I see a re-rip on your page. We all know that you are such a perfectionist, so it is with great elation I get so built-up over these revisits by you Paul. Plus, you always do it on artists that really, really mean something to you. There is such care when you bring out vinyl’s best sonics. You really have created an art form with your elevated and superior vinyl rips. All these songs and artists really matter to you Paul. You are the Ultimate Music Fanatic who I… Read more »
Thank you so much, Jeff. I always appreciate your comments 🙂
Fantastic to have your meticulously ripped recordings. This is one of my fave PSB songs too.
Cheers Paul 🙂
Thank you Mark 🙂
Great rip Paul!! And I just opened my PSB Please and Actually double cd 2018 Remasters that were released today! They have bonus mixes on them that were on a particular Remaster a long time ago that I missed out on.
Thanks again, Paul!
p.s. I hate to ask here and go off topic but any chance we will see some Latin/house-type stuff like Nocera or Pajama Party or Noel or Stevie B?
It’s a shame the just repackaged the old Further Listening release from 2001 and did not bother to add anything new or unreleased. The “Dub Version” and the “Pettibone Mastermix” were not included. I am sure I will post Latin/house at some point Fred 🙂
Yes, it is simply a re-hash of an older Remaster set…but of *a very particular* Remaster set. There were numerous other Remasters of the the 2 albums that did NOT have any of the bonus remixes.
Thanks again, Paul!
thanks a lot for the dub version – it is only on a bootleg so this remaster will probably be better!
Neither mixes on the A-side made it onto the remastered CD’s. 🙁
