New Kids On The Block – You Got It (The Right Stuff) (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1988

“You Got It (The Right Stuff)” is a 1988 single from New Kids on the Block. The lead vocals were sung by Jordan Knight and Donnie Wahlberg. The second single from the group’s second album Hangin’ Tough, it peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in early 1989, while topping the UK charts in November 1989. On the album, it was simply listed as “The Right Stuff”; the change to the single was likely to avoid confusion with Vanessa Williams’ debut hit “The Right Stuff”, which charted earlier that year. A Spanish version of the song was made (“Autentica”) and peaked at number 11 in Spain.

The single appeared in the Top 40 for the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart the week of January 14, 1989, rising from number 45 to 37. “You Got It” reached its peak of number 3 the week of March 11, 1989. Altogether, “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” spent 5 weeks in the Top 10, 8 weeks in the Top 20, and 13 weeks in the Top 40. The song was number one in Australia in August 1989, and in the UK (on its second release) in November 1989. On March 29, 1989, the single was certified Gold. In the music video, Jordan Knight is seen wearing a Bauhaus T-shirt. The song ranked as number 92 on VH1’s 100 greatest songs of the ’80s.

Shalamar – Dancing In The Sheets (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

“Dancing in the Sheets” is a song written by Bill Wolfer and Dean Pitchford and recorded by American R&B group Shalamar. It was featured on the chart-topping soundtrack album of the 1984 motion picture Footloose and was also the first single from their album Heartbreak, featuring the new line-up of Howard Hewett, Delisa Davis, and Micki Free. The synth melody on the song is similar in structure to Prince’s “1999”. A music video was made featuring the new line-up and did not feature any footage from the film.

“Dancing in the Sheets” was a top 20 hit on the Billboard charts, peaking at No. 17 on the Hot 100 and reaching No. 18 on the Hot Black singles chart. The song was also a top ten dance track reaching No. 9 on the Billboard dance chart. On the UK Singles Chart, the song climbed to No. 41.

Additional Recording Info:
For this post, I used my ESI Juli@ XTe Audio Interface (Sound Card) for recording in 32 bit float/96kHz. I used to use this sound card on all posts before 2018 then I switched to a Novation Audiohub 2×4 Audio Interface. I have to say that to my ears the combination of the ESI Juli@, Shiite Mani pre-amp along with the Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge/stylus is a winning combination. I have always loved the ESi Juli@ and I am not sure why I switched. I am going to test this out for a while and see how it goes.

Connections:
Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (DC) to Shiite Mani Pre-amp inputs > Schiit Mani outputs to ESI Juli@ inputs for recording > ESI Jili@ outputs to Novation Audiohub 2×4 inputs for monitoring/playback > Novation Audiohub 2×4 outputs to KRK Rokit 5 monitor speakers and Mackie MR mk3 Series MR10Smk3 subwoofer.

Sheena Easton – Strut (US 12″ Promo)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984

Originally posted March 5, 2013

“Strut” is a song written by Charlie Dore and Julian Littman which was a Top Ten hit single for Sheena Easton in 1984.

Easton had been sent the demo for the song by Christopher Neil who had been Easton’s first producer. Released in August 1984 as the advance single for the album A Private Heaven, “Strut” reached the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 that November to peak at #7. Like its parent album overall, the “Strut” single and accompanying video signaled Easton’s shift towards a more sexually suggestive image.

The song appears to be about being upset with a man for wanting the narrator to be like a previous lover, and about the sexism of the man wanting or expecting women to behave in a certain fashion (“Strut, pout/Put it out/That’s what you want from women”).

“Strut” was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female at the 27th Grammy Awards.

In the UK – where “Strut” was released in November 1984 – the track became the first US Top 40 single by Easton to completely miss the Top 100 of the UK charts.
