Klymaxx – Meeting In The Ladies Room (US 12″ Promo)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1985

“Meeting in the Ladies Room” is a song recorded by Klymaxx for the MCA Records label, and the title track from their fourth album. It was written by Reggie Calloway, Vincent Calloway, and Boaz Watson. It was released as a single, reaching number 4 on the Billboard R&B chart, 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.

The success of this song helped their Meeting in the Ladies Room album reach Platinum status. The song’s music video was directed by Gerald Casale of Devo and featured an appearance from a then-unknown Vivica A. Fox. The song was also included on the MCA Records motion picture soundtrack for 1985’s Secret Admirer—Billboard named the song #85 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time. The song was also featured in an episode of the FX series Pose and in the third season of Logo TV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race. In addition, a comedy sketch parodying the song was featured in an episode of Saturday Night Live as part of their forty-fourth season, granting the group and the song newfound popularity.

The Instrumental Version is Promo only and exclusive to this release.

Club Nouveau – Why You Treat Me So Bad? (Remix) (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1987

“Why You Treat Me So Bad?” is a 1987 single by Club Nouveau from their 1986 album Life, Love & Pain. The basic melodic hook of the song is taken from a hit by Club Nouveau member Jay King’s previous project as producer, Timex Social Club (namely, the song “Thinkin’ About Ya”).

The song has been sampled several times by other musicians. Hip-hop duo Luniz interpolated the music on their hit single “I Got 5 on It”; that song was then sampled by Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs, on his hit single, “Satisfy You”; as well as “I Like It” by Mr. Capone-E and “I Know” by Yo Gotti. Singer Ashanti sampled the song for her hit single “Only U” and Jennifer Lopez on “I’m Gonna Be Alright”.

No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani cited the song for recording her solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., after she listened to it while the band was on tour.

“Why You Treat Me So Bad?” reached #2 on the Billboard R&B Chart, #22 (Dance), and #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.

Village People – Y.M.C.A./Macho Man (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1978

I could not close PRIDE month without showcasing one of the greatest PRIDE Anthems ever recorded Y.M.C.A. recorded by Village People.

Village People reign supreme as gay-anthem chart toppers. Songs like ‘Macho Man’, ‘Go West’ (covered brilliantly by the Pet Shop Boys), ‘Cruisin’’ and ‘In the Navy’ are full of double entendres, and 1978’s ‘Y.M.C.A.’— which became one of the most popular singles of the 1970s — is no different. The Young Men’s Christian Association was so appalled at the song’s implications that it threatened to sue until it noticed that membership had significantly increased in the wake of the tune’s success. Turns out any press is good press — eh, boys?

In 1978 Casablanca Records released a double A-side 12″ which included the Diso Mixes of “Y.M.C.A.” along with “Macho Man”. Both tracks appear only on one side of the record.

“Y.M.C.A.” is a song by American disco group Village People, written by Jacques Morali (also the record’s producer) and singer Victor Willis and released in October 1978 by Casablanca Records as the only single from their third studio album, Cruisin’ (1978). A medley with “Hot Cop” reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart, while the song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1979, placing behind both “Le Freak” by Chic and “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” by Rod Stewart. Outside the US, “Y.M.C.A.” reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart around the same time, becoming the group’s biggest hit. It has sold 12 million copies worldwide.

“Macho Man” was released as the second single and title song of their album of the same name (1978). The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 on June 24, 1978 (when the album had already been charting since March) before picking up more airplay that August. It became the Village People’s first charting hit in the United States, peaking on the Hot 100 at number 25 on the week of September 2.

A medley with “I Am What I Am” and “Key West” reached number four on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart. On the survey of Chicago radio superstation WLS-AM, “Macho Man” spent two weeks at number three.

International Chrysis – Rebel Rebel (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1994

“Rebel Rebel” is a song written and originally recorded by English singer-songwriter David Bowie in 1974.

In 1994 English duo Dead Or Alive covered the song under the short-lived moniker International Chrysis.  The name was a tribute to International Chrysis (1951 – 26 March 1990), an American transgender entertainer and protégé of Salvador Dalí. She also played the damsel in distress in the music video for Van Halen’s version of “(Oh) Pretty Woman”.

International Chrysis was an attempt to create a new identity for themselves, Pete Burns and Steve Coy re-formed their band and released one single as International Chrysis on Stock, Aitken, and Waterman’s PWL label. The single reached #76 in the UK, and #97 in Australia in the United States the single was not released but did receive considerable club play.

“Rebel Rebel” would later be included in the album “Nukleopatra” (1995).

International Chrysis had planned to release a full album Complications with the label forced them to leave PWL with no distributor in the UK for what would become the album “Nukleopatra” once again under the name Dead Or Alive.
