BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983
“Blue Monday” is a single released in 1983 by British band New Order, later remixed in 1988 and 1995. The song has been widely remixed and covered since its original release, and became a popular anthem in the dance club scene. It is the biggest-selling 12″ single of all time.
“Blue Monday” has been a hit several times in the UK. In 1983, it charted twice, initially reaching number 12, then re-entering the chart later in the year and climbing to number 9, helped by the fact that neither side of the single (the B-side “The Beach” was an instrumental re-working of “Blue Monday”) was featured on the UK version of the group’s subsequent album, Power, Corruption & Lies.
In the United States “Blue Monday” debuted on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart on March 26, 1983 peaking at #5 after spending twenty weeks on the survey.

It is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.
Hi,
Just have to mention that this track wasn’t ‘on’ the regular UK version of their LP.
It was only on the cassette versions from places like Australia, Italy & the US.
I have ‘heard about’ some limited edition/promo tape [from the UK] but never seen one for real.
The whole idea for releasing it as a 12” was so it could sit next to the vinyl LP on your shelf.
They never for a minute thought it’d $ELL $O much.

Quite funny with Factory who ok this sleeve from Peter Saville but they did not check the cost leading to the fact that each sold record with the first sleeve version was a 10 cent loss…
However fantastic record and an excellent rip as always!
Thank you Magnus. Yeah that is interesting I read on Wikipedia that they lost money on this record.
I’ve lost count of the number of 80s 12″ CDs in my collection this appears on. BUT it has never sounded better than it does with your rip Paul. Clearer, more definition, just BETTER. Like it was recorded yesterday. Well done. I see there’s quite a few New Order rips already in your library. Perhaps you’d consider adding True Faith (original not remix) and Blue Monday 88 at some point.
Thank you Dan I appreciate the love very much 🙂
Yes i meant to ask if you could post more NO if you get the time. The two mentioned above are two great examples although there’s a plethea of material to post from said band. The ‘Singles’ collection from a number of years back was completely messed up apparently. Despite having this since release i never noticed. But a new version is on the way and apparently much better. I have ordered this already!
Blue Monday and Bizarre Love Triangle are as good as it gets in 80s club music. Is the original 1983 12″ release the same as the version which would later appear on Substance?
Yes I believe it is RollingStoner 🙂
It is indeed, and it’s not shortened or re-recorded on the CD either, unlike a few of the other tracks. It is also the best (and unlimited) digital version you can get, if you don’t like your tape hiss drowned in vinyl surface noise. 🙂
Funny that i mentioned the lack of the biggest selling 12″ of all time on this site and here within two weeks we have it. Many thanks i feel your site is all the better for this post. And it’s not a re-rip so i guess you’ve never posted it before – i’m amazed at that. Many thanks! Have to admit that i too have this on 12″ and love ‘The beach’ pretty much the same as the ‘A’ side!
You’re welcome Neil I try to listen to what you guys are wanting and post them when I can 🙂
And trust me it’s appreciated. I just thought your site had to have this 12″!
You can’t go wrong with one Paul!
Thanks for the rip! 🙂
You’re welcome Ex15 🙂
What can we say that hasn´t already been said about this marvellous, marvellous record? 33 years under its belt and it probably will still be listended to when all of us here will have left the building.
My very first 12inch, still treasured and loved. As RUSS said it´s the holy grail of the 12inch universe. Priceless.
Thank you, Paul.
I agree Song And Dance. You’re welcome 🙂
One of the best songs ever made! I have the multitrack version of it and made some alternative samples, just for fun. Came out as good as the original 🙂 Thanks.
Oooooh, envy rising inside of me 🙂
Drooling over the fact there is multitrack of this somewhere, but at the same time : we are not amused, deep muscle tightning irritation triggert a bending of my spine that seems unhealthy – as I do not have it to play and tinker with musical history, too.
Someone tripped over something and accidentally dropped a handful of tracks somewhere around …
Heh, those tracks are sitting tight 🙂 Not to worry about bootlegging. PS. Multitracks are widely available over the internet, keep looking..
The floppy disc wasn’t *that* new in 1983; the TRS-80, Apple II, Commodore PET, and Atari 400/800 machines all had 5.25″ drives available as early as 1978. 🙂
Aiyaa the holy grail…in amazing DJ Paul fidelity…a “Happy Tuesday” for all of us thanks to you!!
You’re welcome Russ 🙂
Paul, I’m so happy you have presented this GRAND 12-INCH on your site. For one thing, the scan is beautiful!! It was the first thing that drew me into purchasing it in the first place back when the song came out. I was so swept up in its sound, and still am, even after all these years. “The Beach” was just as good and that bass is so compelling. Ooh, I love the sound of the “sonic jet” speeding through the speakers! New Order soon became a favorite of mine. And imagine, someday they would be working with my favorite… Read more »

Jeff
Thanks Paul as always. I love the artwork too.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
