BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1984
“(What) In The Name Of Love” was the first single taken from the second album “Fuel For The Fire” by British new wave band Naked Eyes.
Produced by Arthur Baker, “(What) In The Name Of Love” reached #39 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and, #35 on the Dance chart. In the bands native UK, the song did not have any impact which prompted their record label not release any further singles from the album. Shortly after Naked Eyes disbanded.
The “Instrumental Version” is exclusive to the US 12″.

Hello, thank you for everything you post here, wonderful music!
I’ve been looking for the Naked eyes album of the same name, the one with the songs “fortune and fame”, “always something there to remind me” and others… I think the album was edited under the “burning bridges” title as well. It would be wonderful if you have the album and you could rip it and post it too. Thanks in advance!
I remember the first time I bought records with my own money, I bought this 12″ and Squeeze’s “Singles 45s and Under” best-of compilation—and I still have them both.
I always thought that this single’s changes were hurt by the fact that U2 released “In The Name of Love” right at the same time, and while different genres, that was one too many songs with virtually the same title in the market at the same time. Oh well. Great single to this day. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks, Paul. Another Eighties classic, and probably my favourite song by Naked Eyes. I remember as a young teen trying to figure out who sang “Whisper to a Scream” and blindly picking up this 45 thinking it could be that song (since I didn’t know the song title or lyrics well enough). It was a fortuitous mistake, and I figured out the other band the following week. Looking forward to your rips of these mixes.
Great song, always loved this group and hadn’t heard this song had an extended version. Thanks..
Lo
Always loved this song. Looking forward to hearing the different mixes. Thanks for posting, Paul!
When I was younger, I always confused this song with the Thompson Twins “In The Name Of Love”. Clearly different songs but you know, youth, 🙂
Wow … I totally forgot this song by title. Once I listened, I knew it right away. Thanks for bringing back some totally forgotten memories.
Also, this song is some distilled & concentrated ’80s realness!
[*giggles*]
SOUNDS SO ’80s.
This is one of those songs that I kept remembering and humming to myself — but not knowing who sang it.
That is very unusual. I know all the ’80s songs! :-p
I’d always intend to Google it later and then, of course, forget.
Now here it is — that one ’80s song of which I could never name the artist. Now I know.
Thanks.
🙂
Wow, another rarity! Welcome back Paul! Thank you very much!
You’re welcome Gilbert 🙂
I remember this one well and can’t wait to hear your rips.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Mark 🙂
Thanks so much for posting this. It’s always been one of my favorite Naked Eyes songs. Never understood why it didn’t chart better.
Thanks Paul. I love that band and the further works of Rob Fisher together with Simon Climie (Climie Fisher). The 12″ mix is featured on the Cherry Pop reissue of their album but your rip sounds much better. It’s fine to get also the exclusive Instrumental mix.
You’re welcome Daniel 🙂
Thankyou Paul. I liked both NE and Climie Fisher.
You’re welcome Omar 🙂
PAUL!!! I so love your music collection. So many times it’s uncanny that we love the same records. Haven’t heard this in ages. Back in the day I tried to buy everything that had Arthur Baker’s name on it and this was a beloved 12-inch. So looking forward to the other mixes. Thanks so much for this.
OH! How was your Thanksgiving? I was thinking about you a lot of the time. Hopefully, the issue with your heat is fixed. I do worry about you.
Have a great day and thank you tremendously for this record!
Jeff
Had a great Thanksgiving Jeff. I hope yours was just as great. The heat was back on that evening so we were not without it long. I am rested and glad to be back although I did feel a bit rusty on my skills this morning lol 🙂
