Madonna – Vogue (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1990

“Vogue” is a song by American singer Madonna from her second soundtrack album I’m Breathless (1990). It was released as the first single from the album on March 27, 1990, by Sire Records. Madonna was inspired by vogue dancers and choreographers Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza from the Harlem “House Ball” community, the origin of the dance form, and they introduced “Vogueing” to her at the Sound Factory club in New York City. “Vogue” is an upbeat house song which set trends in dance music in the 1990s. However, it also has strong influences of 1970s disco within its composition. “Vogue” also contains a spoken section, in which the singer name-checks various golden-era Hollywood celebrities. Lyrically, the song is about enjoying oneself on the dance floor no matter who one is, and it contains a theme of escapism.

Critically, “Vogue” has been met with appreciation ever since its release; reviewers have praised its anthemic nature and listed it as one of the singer’s career highlights. Commercially, the song remains one of Madonna’s biggest international hits, topping the charts in over 30 countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It became the world’s best-selling single of 1990, selling over six million copies.

The music video for “Vogue”, directed by David Fincher, was shot in black-and-white and takes stylistic inspiration from the 1920s and 1930s. Madonna and her dancers can be seen voguing to different choreographed moves. The video has been ranked as one of the greatest of all time in different critic lists and polls and won three awards at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards out of a total of nine nominations.

Madonna has performed the song on six of her tours, at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards, and at her performance during the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVI. The song has also been featured on the soundtrack of The Devil Wears Prada, as well as in “The Power of Madonna” episode of the Fox show Glee. Writers and critics have noted the video and the song’s influence in bringing an underground subculture into mainstream popular culture through the postmodern nature of her power and influence, as well as the way in which it followed a new trend in which dance music enjoyed widespread popularity.

I wondered how this would sound with the cold end from the version I have. I did a quick edit using a rip from YouTube. At the moment, I’m not able to walk to my CDs in another room to get a quality track for the edit.

Paul, if links aren’t allowed, let me know.

One of Shep Pettibone’s better known mixes. I still play this from time to time where i play in the UK.

Can’t wait to hear these rips from you.

Cheers Paul 🙂

Exactly and the 7″ (single/radio version) of Vogue never made it onto any M’s albums/compilations. I’ve never understood why. And DJPaul, you’re the best for continuing to brighten our days with these classics.

Great post, Paul! Obviously a classic, but I had always hoped for more mixes from Madonna as she was entering the ’90s. All of 12″s from the 80s had 1-2 mixes and that was that. Seeming with the Erotica 12″ she finally started offering more mixes. Amazing work by Shep, I just wish he was able to release more mixes for Vogue. If folks here look at the stunning work he did for Janet Jackson (for example), many of her 12″s had 6+ mixes with tons of creativity. On a side note, I hope you haven’t left the 80s! I’m… Read more »

The early 90s have some great 12″s and rarities. I can’t think of anything off the top of my head because so many 12″ mixes were released on cd single format. But I am happy to see what Paul dishes out! 🙂

Didn’t Paul’s site state that it was 80’s and 90’s dance mixes? I seem to remember that. Either way, we all know Paul has impeccable taste! And Fred, you know how much I love your tastes too. I was remarking to a friend the other week about you and how you could just know where songs were in your massive collection of vinyl. Forget about a photographic memory, you have a “phonographic” memory.

Ooh Paul!! Count me in as well for more Malcolm McLaren! Burning The Ground deserves so much attention for heralding versions that have never hit CD before (nor YouTube!)so it would be thrilling to get a lot of Malcolm’s discography here. You ALWAYS come to the rescue where major/minor labels fail. You are our patron saint of lost 80’s and 90’s seven and twelve inch dance mixes. Our beloved “Saint Rip.”

Cheers!

I wanted to say, “Strike a pose, baby!” but Jeff was faster 🙂
One of the very best singles of all time, methinks. And great 12inch mixes. Yeah, shame about the “missing” cold end but never mind. Oh, Ms Ciccione. Your humble servant adored you and your music.
I have the 12inch of course (and Waltz Darling, of course, Jeff) but your rip is miles ahead. As usual.

I love that we share a lot of the same tastes Song And Dance! And Malcolm McLaren was so genius. He introduced so many trends that happened in the dance music arena. I first heard of scratching via him. And his fusion of opera with dance beats was far-out: Elegant and Amazing!

When I hear Lakme’s Flower Duet, I still sometimes expect a beat dropping in halfway through.

Strike A Pose Y’all!! Oh Paul, what a fabulous post this is. I first heard about the vogueing phenomenon from Malcolm McLaren record, “Deep In Vogue” which is from his masterful “Waltz Darling” album and was very fascinated by it. But when Madonna came out with her record, it was love at first hear! I especially loved her rap in the middle which mentioned all these famous actors I’ve admired all my life. It’s such an infectious classy tune. I especially love the introduction with the “Ladies with an attitude…” part. Just wish the 12-inch ended cold like the version… Read more »
