Burning The Ground Exclusive

The late ‘80s and early ‘90s were filled with larger-than-life personalities, and few embodied that flashy, genre-blending spirit quite like Louie Louie. A singer, dancer, and actor with undeniable charisma, Louie Louie carved out a unique space in pop with his 1990 hit “Sittin’ in the Lap of Luxury.” Now, with the news of his passing on March 20 at the age of 63, it feels like the right moment to revisit the song that brought him into the Top 40—and into the memories of pop fans everywhere.
Released as the lead single from his debut album The State I’m In, “Sittin’ in the Lap of Luxury” perfectly captured the slick, polished sound of its era. Built on a groove that blends pop, dance, and a touch of new jack swing attitude, the track showcased Louie Louie’s confident vocal style and flair for theatrical delivery. It wasn’t just a song—it was a statement. And audiences responded.
The single became Louie Louie’s only entry into the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40, peaking at #19 in 1990. While he never repeated that level of mainstream chart success, the track remains a defining moment of his recording career—a glossy, infectious anthem of indulgence and ambition that still sounds right at home alongside the era’s biggest dance-pop hits.
Before his recording career took off, Louie Louie paid his dues as a dancer in Las Vegas, where he honed the stage presence that would later define his performances. That same charisma caught the attention of pop royalty—he famously appeared as the love interest in Madonna’s iconic 1984 video for “Borderline,” a role that gave him early exposure on MTV and helped establish his on-screen appeal.
By the time he stepped into the spotlight as a recording artist, Louie Louie had already built a strong visual identity—and that carried over into the music video for “Sittin’ in the Lap of Luxury.” Directed by a then up-and-coming Michael Bay, the clip is a stylish, high-energy affair filled with striking imagery and attitude, hinting at the cinematic flair Bay would later bring to Hollywood blockbusters.
Over the years, Louie Louie released four albums and even found himself connected to the orbit of Prince through collaborations tied to the Paisley Park scene. While he never became a household name on the level of his contemporaries, his work reflects a fascinating cross-section of late ‘80s pop—where dance, R&B, and visual storytelling collided in bold, colorful ways.
“Sittin’ in the Lap of Luxury” stands today as both a time capsule and a testament: a reminder of an artist who brought style, ambition, and undeniable presence to everything he did. With his recent passing, the song takes on an added poignancy—capturing Louie Louie at his brightest, living out the very dream he sang about.
For those who remember it, it’s a nostalgic return to a vibrant moment in pop history. And for those discovering it now, it’s a perfect introduction to an artist who, if only for a moment, truly sat in the lap of luxury.

This is a cool throwback of another track that is nearly lost to the ether of time! Such an ‘early 90’s pop song’ – I always thought this one was the type of track you would hear pop up on Beverly Hills 90210 or a similar show in the soundtrack.
I can say with certainty I have never heard these mixes before. Really cool to revisit this track with these first listens.
So glad you mentioned the director of the music video, really made me laugh a bit! Fun post Dj Paul, thanks so much.
fun post… now if I can just remember what song Prince gifted him…
Prince gifted the Louie Louie an unreleased song titled “Hey, Louie Louie”.
Yes thank you! Hadn’t had a chance to look it up yet!!!
Thanks for the rip, Paul! I remember the chorus vividly (and I’ve sang it a few times every now and then since 1990…not sure why!) but not the rest of the song. This is also a classic jip by Sony not to release all the vinyl mixes on cd format when 1990 was a HUGE time for promo and commercial cd remixes. Thanks so much for the flashback!
They did release some of the mixes on CD format in the US, with a promo CD, while Europe got a Mini CD release as well as a standard CD. There were also alternate mixes, including at least one by Keith Cohen. I believe at least three of the mixes I posted are exclusive to the US and only available on vinyl—Side A: track 2, and Side B: tracks 1 and 2.
Thank You DJ Paul T.!! Love the beat in this trak.!!
You’re welcome, Nicki. I agree that beat is infectious.😊
Thank you for posting this, I loved the vibe of this song when it was first released. I have never listened to the mixes, but really love them! how can you go wrong with Shep? I dont recall loving any other songs from the album (I did purchase it!!), but this song was well worth it!! thank you for making my day.
Greg, You’re so right—how can you go wrong with Shep? He had that magic touch, especially in this era. He could take a solid pop track and just elevate it into something completely irresistible on the dancefloor. I think a lot of people had the same experience with this album—you grab it because of this single, and while the rest doesn’t quite hit the same highs, “Sittin’ in the Lap of Luxury” more than earns its place. It’s one of those tracks where everything just comes together perfectly. Really glad you gave the mixes a proper listen—they add a whole… Read more »
I thought Louie Louie was underrated compared to his peers. I remember this track got played on MTV at the weekends.
I have his 1993 12” single The Thought Of It, which featured Roger Sanchez remixes.
Cheers Paul 🙂
I will have to check out that song!
Mark, I totally agree—Louie Louie never quite got the recognition some of his peers did, but he definitely had the talent and the look to go further. MTV exposure helped, but it still feels like he just missed that next level. That’s awesome you have “The Thought Of It” on 12″! And with Roger Sanchez on remix duties—that’s a killer combo. By ’93, the sound had shifted a bit more into house, so I bet those mixes bring a completely different vibe compared to his earlier material. Really cool piece to have in the collection. I may have to track… Read more »
I discovered this song through a compilation from a nightclub here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the early 90s. I had never seen the single of this song before.

Rafael, That’s awesome—I love hearing how these tracks traveled around the world. A nightclub compilation in Rio in the early ’90s sounds like the perfect place to discover this one. It really has that international club vibe that DJs everywhere could drop into a set. And yeah, the 12″ isn’t one you run into very often, especially depending on where you were. A lot of these records had very specific distribution, so for many people the compilations (or the clubs themselves) were the only way to hear them. Really glad this brought back that memory for you—those early club discoveries… Read more »
I had almost forgot about this record! Paul, I must thank you again for reminding all of us of the great tunes that have slipped from our memories! The song is great! I can’t believe I forgot about it too! Music like this is peppy, bright, and invites you to dance! I’m grateful to have it back in my consciousness once again! Especially with your new equipment! I think the rips sound wonderful. I’ve always thought so, but I do hear a difference. I hope those of us who have those “golden ears” like you have – The Audiophiles –… Read more »
Jeff, That’s exactly why I love doing this—bringing these forgotten gems back into the light 😊 “Sittin’ in the Lap of Luxury” is one of those records that just feels good the second it starts. Total late-’80s/early-’90s energy—bright, polished, and impossible to sit still. I really appreciate your comments about the new rips, too. I’ve been putting a lot of time (and yes, a bit of obsession 😀) into dialing everything in, so it means a lot that you’re hearing the difference. There’s something special about getting as close as possible to what those 12″s actually sounded like coming out… Read more »
