John Williams – Lapti Nek (From The Original Soundtrack Recording Of Star Wars, Return Of The Jedi) (US 12″ Promo)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1983

Return Of The Jedi 40th Anniversary

“Lapti Nek” was a song originally featured in the theatrical cut of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi before being replaced with “Jedi Rocks” in the 1997 Special Edition of the film. The song was written by John Willams, and performed by fictional alien pop music group The Max Rebo Band.

The Max Rebo Band debuted in Return of the Jedi during the scenes set in Jabba’s palace on Tatooine. In the original version, the trio performs a Huttese-language pop song titled “Lapti Nek” (Huttese for “Work It Out”); the English lyrics (by composer John Williams’s son Joseph Williams) are about dancing; Hardware Wars creator Ernie Fosselius helped arrange the song. the song includes vocals by English singer Michele Gruska. RSO Records released a unique 12″ single for the song, including remixes by Grammy-winning remixer/producer Steve Thompson.

Thanks for the rip, Paul 🙂 I never knew a 12in mix of this existed! We went to see ROTJ 40th Anniversary in April. Great to see the film on the big screen again after many decades. Albeit, the 2011 edition – with added Phantom Menace style city-scape CGI, added creatures, different music in Jabba’s Palace and Ewok Celebration / Yub Nub replaced with the less comedic and more emotive Victory Celebration. My only gripe was the unnecessary Darth Vader ADR voiceover muttering “No” then a long “Nooooo!”, as he finally decides to dispose of the Emperor. Hayden Christensen as… Read more »

Long-time fan of this site, but I’ve never posted until today! As a life-long music AND Star Wars fan, I HAD to say thank you for today’s upload! I had the Meco “Ewok Celebration” 7″ as a 12yr old in 1983 and played his version of “Lapti Nek” on it’s B-Side as much as the A-Side, but I never knew official club mixes (by legendary Steve Thompson no less) of John Williams’s version existed until today…and they are AWESOME! Oddly enough, I believe both John Williams and Meco versions use the same vocalist (Michelle Gruska) and possibly the same vocal… Read more »

This is a very cool one — thanks! How is it possible that Return of the Jedi is turning 40 this year? I remember going on opening day and having to wait in line for several hours to get in. I did the same with The Empire Strikes Back. Those movies were such massive events!

To echo Jeff, big welcome back Paul!! We all missed you here, but I hope you had a terrific vacation. I also wasn’t aware of this 12″, but I’m thrilled. I always liked this song in the original theatrical cut. First time I saw the Special Edition and they replaced Lapti Nek, I was like, “Not cool!” Looking forward to this one.

Thanks Paul for posting this. I grew up in the 70’s watching STAR WARS and always loved the movies, comics, Kenner toys etc.Thrilled to see R5-D4 in The Mandalorian series 3 episodes. Steve Thompson worked on Duran Duran’s “A View To A Kill” 12″ (unreleased track), he worked with many of the best music artists that I grew up listening too!.

Loving this Paul.

However, and maybe this is just my download, but are there brief dropouts at 4:07 and 4:13 in the Club Mix?

First, welcome back, Paul!!! Hope you had a great vacation!! I really missed you. Every time I hear songs you’ve posted (which is a lot!) I keep on thinking of you!! Glad you’re back with us!! This is very cool. Although I’m not a “Star Wars” fan, I do love the music. I am not aware of this single at all. I do know, Meco’s “Ewok Celebration” and the obscure “Lapti Nek” song by a band called Urth, but I’m quite excited to hear this one. Awesome too, that Steve Thompson remixed the record. Thanks so much, Paul!! So happy… Read more »
