After spending an long holiday in Italy in the summer of 1985, I returned finding almost all of my friends hooked on the first single surfacing via the semi-underground, Johnny Come Home. From then on Fine Young Cannibals never left the pre-made playlists for parties and mixtapes for holidays, and with this Ever-Fallen-song some scores for weddings – up to this day. Not even Madonna reached that..not even with Holliday :-0

Hello Paul,

Haven’t written in the comments in a while but always catch up with your site as often as possible. Have loved many recent posts but the inclusion of rare FYC mixes has prompted me to write.

Thanks again, so many times, for all you do to preserve these bits of culture for us. FYC in their heyday remind me of my transition from junior high school to high school — such a weird and awkward time for so many of us.

Best wishes from STL,
CakeSaint

Finally! I’ve been waiting ages for some FYC to show up here! And to top it off you start with one I only have a poor copy of, so thank you for that!

Hope to seeing more in the months ahead. 🙂

Absolutely love this version…one of the best songs from the 80’s…it should have been a HUGE hit.

What a voice. Unmistakable, unmissable. Loved the Fine Young Cannibals although EFIL was not my favourite song. I especially loved “I´m Not The Man I Used To Be” and its remix.

Oh, I nearly forgot: HINT HINT 🙂

Have a nice weekend, dear Paul.

Regarding the cover art it looked alot like Talking Heads “Little Creatures”… a little googling and it seems that was painted by Howard Finster (cant post wiki link here)

And yep It seems Howard Finster did the cover for REM’s “Reckoning” on IRS Records. I see an IRS records badge on the rear of this album so it has to be him. Interesting guy.

I’ve got the Something Wild soundtrack on vinyl, there are a few great tracks on there including this one. Look forward to hearing the extended mix when I get home.

Hey Jon if audiofu is good enough you should do a rip and put it on a public tracker ! That soundtrack is pretty rare and all i have ever been able to find over the years online is an unnoficial mp3 version. I have posted a few 24 rips myself and its a very satisfying experience to contribute something back. That is providing your rig is good enough. Surface noise, hums, clicks and pops can drive you nuts if you are a perfectionist. Thats just why i cant speak high enough of DJ Pauls rips. They are truely flawless… Read more »

Hi Kaex,

I’ll look up audiofu, I’ve not heard of that site before. I uploaded the album to mixcloud as two mp3s a while ago:

https://www.mixcloud.com/NiceLPs/something-wild-side-one/
https://www.mixcloud.com/NiceLPs/something-wild-side-two/

Unfortunately I don’t have the software or hardware Paul has — those two mixcloud recordings were done by recording onto a USB plugged into a Teac amplifier unit — but if the LP is hard to find then maybe I should put it on something like audiofu. Sounds like a cool thing to do.

I guess it’s not available because I imagine that you can get most of the tracks elsewhere, though.

Lol Jon ! Audiofu is not a site. Its a way of saying “Audio engineering skills”. Its a portmanteau of Audio and Kung-Fu. I upload all of my 24bit Vinyl Rips to rutracker. It seems to be the internet’s music repository since what.cd got shut down. I had a listen to your mixcloud recording and its not too bad at all ! Its worth noting your mp3 file got recompressed by mixcloud further down into a 74kbps mp4 file. Still got the original lossless recordings ? its all down to bit-depth. If you are capturing recordings in 16bit you might… Read more »

Haha, ok I get audiofu now. It’s funny because there is a music publishing site/app out there called audiofu!

I do record and mix my own music, but my vinyl ripping ability is non existent really. The amp/hi-fi that I use to rip vinyl creates (if I recall correctly) 192kbs mp3 files only. Pretty basic. I don’t really have a big enough vinyl collection to justify upgrading.

Man, it’s been so cold here in New Jersey and thankfully, Burning The Ground really warms up my spirits!! You’re better than a hot cider or mulled wine or cocoa Paul!! Hey, this is just another instance of synchronicity on your site. Just the other day, I heard FYC’s “Good Thing” and started to think about other tracks by them. Also, Pete Shelley’s work has been going through my head. Well, here you go posting something written by Mr. Shelley and done by Fine Young Cannibals. I love these psychic moments Paul that I have concerning you and the music… Read more »

Loved Fine Young Cannibals in the 80’s, Johnny Come Home, Ever Fallen In Love, She Drives Me Crazy and Good Thing being my favourites. Ever Fallen in Love was a good cover of punk band Buzzcocks, FYC also covered Elvis Suspicious Minds in 1985, both covers did well in the UK charts. Andy Cox and David Steele were originally from SKA band The Beat. I remember in 1989 watching their lead singer Roland Gift acting in the film Scandal (about the Profumo Affair), Roland played Christine Keeler’s boyfriend Johnny Edgecombe. The theme song to the film Scandal was “Nothing Has… Read more »

John,

I loved that song from the film Scandal. I have that soundtrack and that Dusty Springfield song is a favorite of mine. I forgot that Roland Gift was in the movie too. So great you brought it up!!

Have a nice weekend!
