Erasure – The Circus (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“The Circus” is a song by British synthpop duo Erasure, released in September 1987 as the band’s seventh single overall. It is also the title track on their second album, The Circus.

The album version clocks at 5.30 minutes, so the song was remixed for the single release to a much more radio-friendly 3:50 minutes. Mute Records issued it as the fourth and final single from the album.

Written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, “The Circus” was a departure from the shiny pop of their six previous singles, creating a more down-tempo and melancholy mood. Essentially a synthpop track, the music is accentuated by acoustic guitar and a continuous circus-like accordion. The lyrics touch on social issues, rare for the duo, and center on the lament of “working men”, whose bright futures and job securities are left shattered in the modern world of greedy corporations and technology.

The song’s distinctive and unusual sound is said to have been inspired by Bell hearing a record being played backward.

Despite its haunting quality and dark lyrical content, “The Circus” became Erasure’s third UK Top 10 hit, peaking at number six.

Thank you. The Bareback mix from this 12″ single fades early on its CD appearances (EBX 2 and The Circus remastered). Conversely, the Decay mix has a longer ending on the EBX 2 (CD box set) appearance.

Happy New Year Paul, I just wanted to ask you how you connect the Novation Audiohub to the computer through USB? Also do record into a Mac or PC. Thanks!

Happy New Year Paul!! So sorry for not commenting yesterday as I pulled a back muscle and still suffering from a bit of pain. Thank you for this post. Karen is euphoric and I am just as excited. That “Decay Mix” is still haunting to me all these years later. Very strange! I just love this record and it is great that you’re giving it another spin on your site.

Cheers,

Jeff

What a great way to start 2019 with an Erasure post. The Pascal Gabriel version was played quite a bit on one of my then local radio stations.

Thanks Paul and a Happy New Year 🙂

Brilliant start into 2019, Paul. Back then I did not warm up to The Circus after Heavenly Action, Sometimes and It Doesn´t have To Be which I loved and still love. I only got to like Circus much, much later when I completed my 12inch collection of Erasure songs. Nowadays I really like the song although (or even because) it is so very much different from most of their other hits. And there are so many of them…. There is only a couple of singles that I do not love – Chains Of Love, Oh l´amour and Star among them.… Read more »

Thanks so much Paul! This lower BPM doesn’t get as much love (neither does Ship Of Fools), so it’s good to see it puled out for a rip here. 🙂

Agreed! I would love to see “The Touring Circus” posted here.

Maybe some of the other “limited edition” Erasure 12″s as well…Paul? 😉
