“Oh L’amour” is a song by English synthpop duo Erasure, released in April 1986 as their third single.
It was issued by Mute Records in the UK and Sire Records in the U.S. to herald the June release of Erasure’s debut album Wonderland, but became the third consecutive commercial failure for the band in both territories. Despite its low chart placing, “Oh L’amour” has proven to be one of Erasure’s signature songs, due to its popularity in dance clubs. It remains a favourite among fans, particularly when performed live. On the UK singles chart “Oh L’amour” peaked at the #85 position while in the US the single reached #3 dance.
Written by Erasure members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, “Oh L’amour” is a lament from someone experiencing unrequited love (“broke my heart / now I’m aching for you”). The song is an uptempo synthpop dance track and its popularity was further fueled in dance clubs by the “Funky Sisters Remix”, which appeared on the US & UK 12 inch singles and as a bonus track on the U.S. edition of Wonderland.

I was surprised to see 1986 as the release date. I thought it came out earlier than that. Amazing to think it’s been almost 30 years. 30! 1986 was such an excellent year for this kind of music.
And seeing Flood on the sleeve. There should be coffee table books devoted to this guy! So odd that there aren’t.

Fabulous post, Paul. Vince Clarke was mighty worried during this phase of his career. The hits came quick and easy with Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The Assembly, But came to a halt from 1984 to late 1986. Erasure wasn’t capturing the public’s heart. All quite strange as I think this is quite the catchy synth pop number. Thankfully Vince got back to his winning ways with Sometimes. I think this PWL remix is the best. Thanks for this rare edit! Thanks SO much Paul! I grabbed myself a copy of this, but never got round to ripping it (Not that I could do HALF a job as good as you could!) Actually, this was my first experience with an Erasure promo-only remix/edit meant for radio, but, sadly, this never got the US radio airplay later singles did. In fact, the most widely played radio-only version of an Erasure track was to be Shep’s “Chains Of Love (Remix Radio Edit With Intro)” from the Promo 7″/2nd 12″/CD5″ of Chains Of Love; a version which is still in 80’s rotation at WPLJ… Read more »
Hi Goodguy I always loved this track Sire was pretty good about issuing remix/edit 7″ singles. I was lucky enough to see Erasure live in 1987 when they opened for Duran Duran.

Haven’t listened to this in years – great song. You’re right that it wasn’t a big hit for Erasure, but a cover version by Dollar, produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, reached number 7 in the UK in 1987.
