Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986
“Youthquake” is the second studio album by the English pop band Dead or Alive, released on 3 May 1985 by Epic Records. The album was their commercial breakthrough in Europe and the United States, due to the lead single “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”, a UK No. 1 hit and a Top 20 hit in the United States. Additional single releases from the album included “Lover Come Back to Me”, “In Too Deep” and “My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor)”.
This was Dead or Alive’s first collaboration with the Stock Aitken Waterman production team. The recording was marked by tension and clashes between the band and producers, which engineer Phil Harding alleges almost escalated to violence.
In 1986 one of the most influential Remix services Razormaid released Chapter A.2 which included a medley of tracks taken from “Youthquake” along with a remix of the downtempo album track “It’s Been A Long Time” Both were remixed by Razormaid c-founder Joseph watt.
Both tracks were originally released on Yellow transparent vinyl on the issue Razormaid Chapter A.2. I also created custom art for this release.

Thank you for this post and all Dead Or Alive posts. What did you think of the new Hi-NRG mixes? I found them to be exhausting. There are some good ideas, but they just go on and on and aren’t as musical as songs were in the original era.
Thank you!! I’m so regretting not the singles box, but to be honest with snafus from the last two box sets (from Edsel/Demon), I was a more than a little reticent.
Joseph Watt is a twat.
I have about 5 of the Razormaid Gdlock 2×12″ from 1991 till 1993
About 4 years ago I asked him if he ever went back and checked his edits. if they were slightly off and were bad edits because I try to mix them, they are not exact. I double-checked the various locked beats and they drift. the whole series of his remixes are bad edits. Anyway, my emails were not excusing; I just wondered if they were not in time. He got all defensive and I told him to f**k off.
A thing to note about early Razormaid. . . 1) Joseph and Art were not Djs, Not even musical in the beginning. . 2) they were called RAZORmaid because they were reel to reels cut by razor, hence the name. No way any of that could be precise. .
I love “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)”… I love megamixes, … I love Razormaid, … and I love your custom cover art! Great job as usual! THANK YOU!!!!
Did you hear the new Pete Hammond remixes yet?
Martika, I loved reading that you’re an uber-fan of Razormaid! I discovered the remix service in the 80’s because I was searching for a service that remixed New Wave and alternative forms of dance music. I even had the cool privilege in talking to Joseph Watt a couple of times on the phone. Him and his partner Art Maharg have created a body of work that is glorious on all counts and stands the test of time! From beautifully produced mixes to outstanding artwork and lovely colored vinyl records. I believe they were the first service to produce compact discs… Read more »
I enjoyed the new Pete Hammond remixes because they’re tastefully remixed without losing the originals feel, sort of like the old Razormaid remixes! I’ve always love the Razormaid remixes because they focused on the stuff that was actually playing in the clubs rather than regular pop songs. I bought some of the Razormaid boxes and was amazed at the absolutely perfect track listing! No fillers… just the most amazing 80s and early 90s dance music! I can’t believe you actually talked to Joseph Watt! He should hire you to restore their old vinyl releases!
I meant to say he should hire Paul to restore their old vinyl releases! You should introduce them.
I had been a Razormaid subscriber since R-1 & was in the Army in 1990 when I was deployed as part of Desert Storm. When I deployed I had my subscription paused until I got back. Art was more than happy to do so & asked if there was anything they could do to show their support & I said new music (mix tape) would be a lifesaver. One of the Razormaid news letters during that time mentions me & my request. They had subscribers (DJs) send tapes to them & then they sent them to those who were deployed.… Read more »
That’s an amazing story, Scot G! I love it when humans act humane! You truly made my day with this story… and it makes me love Razormaid even more!
Dear Scot G, First things first, thank you for your service to our country. You and your fellow soldiers have our undying gratitude for dedicating your time in the military! Thank you for sharing this cool story with us, and YES, I do remember the newsletter you talked about. It was wonderful that Joseph and Art showed their support to you and others by making mix-tapes available to you. Over the years I have heard that they have generously done things for others as well and this has given me a greater appreciation of who they are. … Read more »
Thank you so much, Martika. I have heard the new Pete Hammond mixes I bought the Record Store Day vinyl release which I will probably leave sealed. The mixes are pretty good it is nice to see DOA releases. I hope you have a great weekend 🙂
I’m always interested in these megamixes, particularly from the 80’s decade. I haven’t heard this before though. In Too Deep is one of my favourite 12” singles from DOA, although not featured here.
Cool custom artwork!
Thanks Paul 🙂
Thank you, Marco. “In Too Deep” and “Lover Come Back To Me” are my favorites but as you said not included in the megamix. Have a great weekend.
Thank you Paul for this rarity! And beautiful custom artwork! Have a great weekend to you, Jeff, Martika, Fred and all the other record spinners here!!

I am a voracious fan of Razormaid and I love that you posted one of their best megamixes around!! This is a perfect post too because it reminds us that the new Dead Or Alive, Pete Hammond Hi-NRG mixes are available to one and all. I think it’s a wonderful collection of remixes done in an 1980’s fashion. Thank you, Paul, for this generous gift to us all. Have a marvelous weekend!! And to everyone else, Song And Dance, Retro Hound,… Read more »
