HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETE BURNS!
“Misty Circles” is a song written and recorded by English New Wave/dance band Dead or Alive. It was co-produced by the band and Zeus B. Held and released as the first single from Dead or Alive’s first album Sophisticated Boom Boom.
“Misty Circles” was the first song to be released by Dead or Alive after being signed to a major label, Epic Records. The band’s prior single releases were issued independently. This song was not very successful, but it managed to peak at number 100 on the UK Singles Chart. In 1984, the song was placed on the B-side of “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”. As both sides earned significant play in American nightclubs, they charted together as a double-sided hit on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at number four. The band performed it before a live audience on Razzmatazz, which features Pete Burns wearing a wardrobe similar to Boy George’s, and thus created some temporary friction between the two singers in later years.

Dooooooood! I think I have been looking for the answeres that are in that video for YEARS…. I knew when I heard the tune way back when that it was a new sound… I am so glad that they did not stop at the demo version. I would have loved to stay in the studio and listened to Mr. Pete Waterman finish the mix…. If anything made my Monday better, it was this post.

So who were the underground hi-NRG producers that Pete Burns would have heard, before Pete Waterman commercialised it?
It was early Divine singles that inspired the sound Pete wanted to recreate for “Spin Me”. SAW had just done You Think You’re A Man and since that wasn’t the massive hit it should have been, they were cheap. Divine’s original producer, Bobby O (Orlando) was orginally approched but proved to be too expensive.

Brilliant!!! I have this 12″, and a few other of the early releases.
So good to hear their beginnings, and what they sounded like as a real band before SAW got on board. (I don’t know who approached who actually, as SAW weren’t that famous at that point???)

Jermajesty, it was DOA who approached SAW, SAW had their first Top 20 hit with Divine’s You Think You’re A Man by then, and Pete loved the sound they created for Divine, and wanted SAW to create the same sound for them.
