BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987
“Day-In Day-Out” is the first track on David Bowie’s album Never Let Me Down. It was issued as a single in March 1987, ahead of the album’s release.
Bowie wrote the song out of concern for the treatment of the homeless in the US. The song’s R&B roots were reminiscent of some of Bowie’s R&B work in the 1970s with one author saying that the song is “an example of Bowie’s strength in the R&B genre.”
The single’s B-side, “Julie,” was described by one reviewer as the “catchiest” song of all the songs from Never Let Me Down, and lamented that the song was relegated to b-side status
This Limited Edition US 12″ contains the “Groucho Mix” remixed by Paul “Groucho” Smykle and is only commercially available on this 12″. It did also appear on a UK 12″ promo.

I must admit I love your vinyl transfers, even of things i already have on CD as well as vinyl. You’re up there with Dr. Ebbetts in my opinion.
One note, the Groucho Mix did indeed appear in the UK, very limited on 12 EAX 230, but also appeared on the limited cassette maxi-single of Never Let Me Down.
All the best.
New one to me, Paul. Thank you, and for keeping me updated, well, on music that’s new to me!
Thank you very much Paul.
Firstly, thank you for these wonderful and (sometimes) forgotten great songs you are uploading.
Go on!
Thanks, Paul.
Told you it was a great mix from Groucho 🙂
Paul “Groucho” Smykle has done great work on Grace Jones’ tracks, too. Ooh, what he could do with recently recorded material
🙂
This is such a great series and tribute. I missed a few of these the first and second time around, It is such a treat to get a chance to hear some of these more obscure versions, and so perfect too, so much of this era of his music has been left behind in the record crates. Thanks again Paul for giving these songs a second spin.
After all this Day-In Day-Out mixes I still favourise the single version. Anyway a marvelous
effort to bring us Bowies 12″ legacy closer!
Very nice…to see this rare 12 Inch. Thanks. I would love to see some rare 12 Inches also from the beginning of the 90’s. For an example the “Fame 90” with the longest Version (in my opinion) ever released for a DB Single Fame 90 Absolutely Nothing Premeditated / Epic Mix – Running time 14:24 out of the US 12 Inch EMI USA – V-56163). But I must admit that all singles from the 90’s (also from artist who are starting in the 80s with 12Inches with only Extended Mixes) suffering from the overkill with versions and remixes. But esp.… Read more »
Thanks Paul! 🙂
You’re welcome Kent 🙂
Thanks for another great post, Paul. One question – you say this was available only on this US 12″ and a UK promo, so is it different from the mix on the UK remix 12″ – 12 EAX 230? Sorry, I’m being lazy as I could compare the two, but just wondered if you knew 🙂
Pretty sure it is the same mix Jonathan I must have over looked that release 🙂
This is a real treat. Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Junior 🙂
I’ve been a Bowie fan since 1987, so it’s been great listening to these 12″ versions again, Day-In Day-Out had a few versions on vinyl including a Spanish Version, this was a time when remixes sounded like the originals, just extended! These have been fantastic posts Paul, and it’s great you have kept your vinyl collection, and what a great collection to have. I would love to see Duran Duran’s Nite Romantics, Carnival, Tiger! Tiger! and Strange Behaviour Eps in 24 Flac, even though I have them on cd, I just love those covers you scan, it’s like seeing those… Read more »
I just may do those sometime Lee and they sound so good on vinyl 🙂
Thanks Paul,
now I love You!!!
…😊
Thank you BE.D12”. Love you back 🙂
And here ends the Bowie project! Very good thank you for all your hard work. As much as i love Bowie i’m looking forward to not knowing what tomorrow will bring. Damn, i love this site!
Thank you Neil. i love having you here :0
Wow Paul!! You’re making me delirious for these “Day-In Day-Out” remixes. I’m so appreciative for all the time spent extracting the sounds from these classic Bowie records. I know it’s his legacy you’re celebrating, but I celebrate your legacy for the phenomenal work you do to bring us the very best in music.
Humbled,
Jeff
Extremely happy to do it all Jeff. Hugs 🙂
Thanks Paul.
You’re wlcome Omar 🙂
Thank you
You’re welcome David 🙂
