Cyndi Lauper – Boy Blue (Remix) (Japan 7″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987

“Boy Blue” is a pop song written by Cyndi Lauper, Stephen Broughton Lunt, and Jeff Bova for Lauper’s second album True Colors (1986).

It was released as the album’s fourth single in 1987. The single version is a remix (which cuts much of Lauper’s more impressive vocal wailing, presumably an effort to make it more commercially accessible). Charting at #71 on the US Billboard Hot 100, it was Lauper’s first solo single that failed to make a real impact on the charts. Proceeds from the sale of the single were donated to AIDS organizations.

The official video was a live clip of the song in Paris, France and it was pulled from the concert video of Cyndi Lauper in Paris. The video received heavy airplay on MTV when the single was released (during June and July 1987) and was rarely played after. A live version of “Boy Blue” was later released as the B-side of her single “Hole in My Heart (All the Way to China)”.

Thematically like “True Colors” on the album, Lauper wrote this song for a friend who died of AIDS, and the title comes from a poem by Eugene Field called “Little Boy Blue”.

Cyndi was the first voice I ever heard that told me it was okay to be different, that I deserved happiness, too.
I’ll always be loyal to her!

“It’s a strange lesson to learn in life that your differences,
the things that make you feel uncomfortable about yourself
are what will help you to grow into who you are.
Those are your gifts.”
— Cyndi Lauper

You’re really on the pulse of things Paul. Just this morning I read a great Yahoo! article about Cyndi Lauper, after all, her “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” was released September 6, 1983. The article went on to describe how this song was and still is a Feminist anthem. Brava to Cyndi for her excellence. They also mentioned Robert Hazard who composed the song. Gosh, I miss him. His “Escalator of Life” and “Change Reaction” are two of my New Wave favorites.

Thank you so much Paul!!! Cyndi really is one of my favorites and I had this single remix in a bad quality for years (this version has never been released on any compilation cd ever), so now because of you i finally have it in the best possible quality. You’re the best!

I don’t have any 7″ record of this, but I think what you call remix is just the normal 7″ mix.

Track length looks like that: https://www.discogs.com/Cyndi-Lauper-Boy-Blue/release/2199151

I believe this is the link you’re looking for https://www.discogs.com/Cyndi-Lauper-シンディローパー-Boy-Blue-ボーイブルー/release/1822335

If you listen to the mix present on the upload there are certainly some differences between it & the album version found on True Colors. Not a major overhaul mind you, but definetly a different mix. Hopefully that helps 🙂

The LP version of the song is just that, the LP version, where as this is a 7″ remix commissioned for the single release. Unlike most of Cyndi’s singles up to this point there was no alternate 12″/extended version made for Boy Blue so the version included on the 12″ vinyl releases was simply the album version. The 7″ Paul has featured here is a remix. A subtle remix, but a remix all the same. If you listen to the 7″/single mix featured here and the album/full length version you’ll notice the differences in the two versions.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou! I had already read there was a remix but hadn’t come across it until now. Now… is it possible to find the 7″ remix of “My First Night Without You”?

You never fail to surprise me, Thanks Paul!

One of my absolute favorite cuts from the “True Colors” album (and the live version takes her vocal acrobatics to whole other level! lol). I’ve been curious about this rare remix for several years so thank you very much for this post Paul – another great choice 🙂

Great songwriter, amazing voice, and spectacular live performer.
And.. she seems like a genuinely nice person.

I really like Cyndi Lauper. Although she’s not the first to come to mind in my vast collection of music when I go reaching for 80s music, she WAS the 80s. She sat a few rows in front of me on a plane 10+ years ago but I didn’t get a chance to say hi (and I am also not star-struck like many people). She performed with the Boston Pops in 2001 and although great signing, she was all. over. Keith. Lockhart. Oh, and his wife, Lucia Lin, was playing the violin during the show…gotta wonder how she was enjoying… Read more »

I love me some Cyndi!! Paul, very excellent of you posting this remix for this song. I always feel that Cyndi wasn’t given the push like other artists received. She’s brilliant in my book with a big heart and true blue sincerity.
