Billy Joel – Tell Her About It (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1983

“Tell Her About It” is a 1983 hit song written and performed by Billy Joel, from the album An Innocent Man. An apparent homage to the Motown Sound, the song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for one week on September 24, 1983, replacing the Phil Ramone-produced song, “Maniac” by Michael Sembello. The single was certified Gold by the RIAA for US sales of over 500,000 copies. In interviews, Joel has indicated that the song, heard out of context of the An Innocent Man album, sounds more like a Tony Orlando and Dawn record than the Motown sound he intended.

Paul,

You never fail to surprise me with your selections. I vividly remember buying this 12 inch at my local Peaches and working it into my set. As always, you rock!

I used to have this in my vinyl collection but it became unplayable. This vinyl rip really saves the day.

Thanks Paul 🙂

Hi DJ Paul, thanks for this great post. Love this 12″ mix! Billy is not known for having 12″ mixes so this one is a treasure. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

OMG! I’m a huge Billy Joel fan and have never seen this gem in all my hunting… not only to have a true remix of one of his songs (the only time that happened perhaps?), but the live cut on side two, presumably from his days with The Hassles… AMAZING !

Thank you DJPaul!

The Jellybean remix of Tell Her About It has been easily available on cd in perfect sound quality since 2005.

Hi Alex,

I believe that Label typically includes vinyl source as their masters. If you own the cd, it would be great to hear your review of it vs. Paul’s rip.

Thanks!

That various artists compilation does *not* include a digital transfer of Tell Her About It remix, it’s a genuine master tape to cd source. It sounds perfect. If you want a comparison with this vinyl transfer, let’s just say the digital source is cleaner and better textured, with a better definition on the upper range as well. In addiction, the extended Tell Her About It was first released on a four-track, 5-inch UK CD-single edition of I Go To Extremes, in a slimline jewel case with a catalog number of Joel CD2. It was issued in 1990. It’s not present… Read more »

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the info on that rare cd single…I use discogs as my main source of cd info…where are you getting the info about this cd single? I’d love to read more about it and possibly purchase. I’m a cd single AND 12″ junkie. 🙂 Thanks.

EDIT: I’m sorry if I misled anyone…when I asked for Alex to compare the cd vs. Paul’s rip, I didn’t mean to compare “cd quality to vinyl” as most probably read my statement. I meant, how does the track on cd really sound?…does it sound like vinyl? And if it does sound like vinyl, how does it compare to Paul’s rip (which is fabulous for this rip and fabulous for everything he does!) I hope this clears up any confusion or misunderstanding. I also hope Paul didn’t read/see my statement as a question of his hard work and quality rip.… Read more »

ALEX you are being kind of a jack ass. You could at least say thank you to Paul for his hard work instead of basically saying the CD that you have sounded better than Paul’s transfer. I own many Music Factory comp’s and like Fred said they usually use vinyl. You are very ungrateful!!!

I’ve been asked and replied.
The digital version sounds better than this vinyl transfer, nothing personal to DJ Paul.

To you: be careful when you call people names, even if you’re a faceless internet user.

Oh, this is sweet! You also wouldn’t happen to have the 7″ or 12″ promo version of “Sometimes A Fantasy” would you? It has a cold ending which runs longer than the LP version and has never appeared digitally. Keep up the great work!

Hi Aaron and Paul, That mix with the cold ending is simply the album version with ~30 more seconds on the end. That’s it. I know it’s technically different, but it’s pretty lame in my opinion for the Label to release such a “mix” and after listening to it last night on Youtube, it’s really, really lame. 🙂 Just another 30 seconds of instrumentals with some chorus. They could have at least had a 16 or 32 beat ending with instruments or start the intro with an additional 16 beat intro. But, such was life in the early 80s with… Read more »

Wow Paul! I’ve been waiting for this post for a very long time. I love this song and mainly this brilliant Jellybean remix so much. As far as I know this mix wasn’t available on CD or digitally. Now it is. Can’t wait to listen to it. Thanks a million.

THANKS SO MUCH, Paul!!!! This is such a rarity and I literally heard it once on radio! I also believe this is Billy’s only 12″ single that had a remix.

This is classic Tokes and Jellybean work with their signature breakdowns and instrument-centric mixing.

Thank you very, very much again!

Paul, again you come through with guns blaring!! I thought I would never hear this again, especially in your superior sound quality. I know Daniel is going to be thrilled! I remember buying this 12-inch and taping it for a fraternity party. At first, the floor didn’t know what was happening, but then they got really into it. I love that you’ve brought back a beloved single back into being.

You’re right Jeff. I’m completely thrilled by this post. How did you get to remember that I love this song? We can always count on Paul for giving us so much joy. We are so lucky to have him. Once again he shares with us another masterpiece in usual crystal clean sound quality. I will always be grateful to him.

I remember you talking about this special mix when Paul posted “Keeping The Faith” and then another time just recently. Like you Daniel, I’ve longed for this mix for a quite long time. Paul always makes good on his promises and I am so grateful to him for the effort and care and LOVE that is behind each one of his vinyl rips. He spoils us so. He always makes my heart swell with his gifts.

Have a great day Daniel,

Jeff
