BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1987
“You Win Again” is a 1987 song written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and performed by the Bee Gees. Released as a single in late 1987, it marked the start of the group’s comeback, becoming a No. 1 hit in many European countries, including the UK—their first to do so in over eight years, and made them the first group to score a UK No. 1 hit in each of three decades: the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
As songwriters, the Gibb brothers received the 1987 British Academy’s Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. In 1988, the band received a Brit Award nomination for Best British Group. In a UK television special on ITV in December 2011, it was voted second (behind “How Deep Is Your Love”) in “The Nation’s Favourite Bee Gees Song”.
“You Win Again” was a No. 1 single in Britain, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Norway, as well as making the top 10 in Italy, the Netherlands, Australia and Sweden. It also topped the Eurochart for four weeks. When the song reached No. 1 on 17 October 1987 in the UK, it made the Bee Gees the first group to score a UK No. 1 hit in each of three decades: the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. “You Win Again” entered the UK Singles Chart in September at No. 87, eventually staying at No. 1 for four weeks keeping off George Michael’s single “Faith”.
It was less successful in the US, however, only reaching No. 75 in the Billboard Hot 100.

Thank you very much Paul.
Looooove me some Bee Gees – thank you for this treat, DJPaul!
Thank you!
The Bee Gees, (sigh) my childhood band, it’s a shame they had such little twelve inches mixes out there. whats with this record company?
Anyways, The cover art is doing great for this track.
Thanks for this gem, you have a great taste DJPaul 🙂
Fantastic track, one of my all time favourite songs. Keep up the good work. You bring my teenage years back to me with such aplomb, when you waited with baited breath for your favourite bands 12″ single to come out. You’ve posted most of mine in here, but I continue to visit as your work is excellent and gems like this come up. Many thanks
Love this song! Warner tried to push it a second time in the US on the One album, but that did not work out. Even Michael Jackson sampled it in his Ghost video. He was a big fan of the Gibbs. Hope you will have more of the Bee Gees soon!! Thanks!
Great track, but a very lame Pettibone mix. Always wondered if he had an off day or was restricted by Bee Gees or record compagny. Either way not his most memerable piece of work.
Couldn’t agree more, The Pettibone Mix is really lame.
Always have time for the Bee Gees 🙂
Massively under-rated songwriters I feel.
Thank you Paul.
I 100% agree with you Jay 🙂
Yes, disco was pretty much banned after 1979 in the USA. Seriously. There are so many bad stories about fights and such.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco_Demolition_Night is a great and funny read about such an event.
It wasn’t until 1989 or later did radio stations start to include a disco hit here or there in “flashback” nights or even the live club broadcasts. Around 1992 disco was welcomed back with soooo many compilation cds, dedicated 70s broadcasts, and clubs would start including the disco era tracks again.
Thanks for the rip, Paul!! I love anything Shep works on!
Thought it wasn’t Shep’s best mix it could have been better in my opinion still a great song Bee Gees are amazing artists. The whole Disco sucks thing was pretty stupid just glad it was embraced again.
The USA did not give the Bee Gees much love during the 80s period this single only managed to peak at #75.
It’s nice to see another Shep Pettibone mix on here. I remember the track getting played very regularly here in the UK.
Cheers Paul 🙂
Cheers Mark 🙂
I LOVE L:O:V:E the Bee Gees. The One Night Only live DVD is the best music dvd I own, I think. Ok, I must admit that for me personally YWA is one of the very least liked songs of all time but you can´t have everything, can you. It got massive massive airplay over here as it was a massive hit. Still gets played on the radio quite a lot. I was never able to warm up to it but never mind – it´s the (beep) BEE GEES! 🙂
Always liked the laid back soulful kind of vibe of this song too bad it did not do much here in the states sometimes I wonder about our tastes in music here in the USA.
It’s so nice to get a Bee Gees’ twelve from you Paul. I don’t know this one but I’m looking forward to hearing it. The US didn’t give them much of a chance after their peak “Disco” releases. I’m so happy you have that European sensibility and love so many musical genres. And it is with great pleasure that I’ll be hearing it in your sensational mastering. Gosh, your music just sounds so luscious to my ears. I literally swoon whenever I make a CD compilation from your expertly rendered tracks. “Thank You Paul” is my mantra.
Jeff
I like your mantra Jeff 🙂
Thanks Paul. This single was a massive hit here in Europe. Robin Gibb also released great solo stuff during the 80s including 12″ remixes that have never been released on CD. Maybe you will post some of them someday.
You’re welcome Daniel 🙂
