Bananarama – Venus (Special Edition) (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“Venus” is a 1969 song written by Dutch musician Robbie van Leeuwen. In 1970, the Dutch rock band Shocking Blue took the song to number one in nine countries.

In 1986, the British female pop group Bananarama returned the song to number one in seven countries.

“Venus” had been a part of Bananarama’s repertoire for several years before they actually recorded it. The group’s three members, Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward, had the idea of turning the song into a dance music tune, but they were met with resistance from their producers at the time, Steve Jolley, and Tony Swain. Bananarama brought the idea to the production trio of Stock Aitken Waterman, and it became Bananarama’s first collaboration with them.

Dallin, Fahey, and Woodward had nearly completed recording their third album, titled True Confessions, with Jolley and Swain. Stock, Aitken, and Waterman also resisted the idea because they believed that “Venus” would not make a good dance record. After persistence by the women, SAW relented. Bananarama’s “Venus” went to number one in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Mexico, and South Africa. It hit number two in Germany and Hong Kong and was a top ten success in Italy, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and their native UK (number 8 on UK Singles Chart). It also went to number one for two weeks on the US Dance chart.

The collaboration on “Venus” led Bananarama and SAW to work together on the group’s follow-up album Wow! the following year.

The music video, directed by Peter Care, with choreography by Bruno Tonioli, received extensive play on MTV and video channels across the world, and presented Bananarama in various costumes, including a she-devil, a French temptress, a vampiress, and several Greek goddesses. In one sequence of the video, The Birth of Venus, the painting by Sandro Botticelli is adapted as a tableau vivant. The video marked a pivotal shift towards a more glamorous and sexual image for the girls that contrasted with the tomboyish style of their earlier work.

Woo hoo! Your rips always sound so much better than when I used to play my 12″ singles. Although… new turntable finally on the way, so I can listen to the ones I’ve got that you haven’t posted yet! 🙂

Ah, one of my very first 12″ singles…this one holds a special place in my heart. I remember playing this single non stop and driving my parents crazy. I agree, your rips are far superior to remastered CDs – there is a warmth and dynamic that they cannot reproduce. Well done, Paul. Love the Nanas, by far my favorite girl group and one of my all-time favs all around.

OMG, I played the heck out of this 12″ in 1986 when I originally found it in the (literal) basement record shop of a department store. Combined with my burgeoning Dead Or Alive collection at the same time, an eternal love for SAW was born.

Thanks for the great rip, Paul! Such a big song back then.

I have to say, the 4:44 – 4:50 of the Hellfire mix is the epitome of SAW…I swear, all the SAW recordings sounded the same and incorporated that loop. 🙂

Have fun!

I loved this version when it first got released.I thought they did the original justice. “I Heard A Rumour” was another favourite of mine too.

Love the artwork also.

Cheers Paul 🙂

I HEARD A RUMOR was the song playing the very first time I stepped into a gay bar!
Along with Madonna’s CAUSING A COMMOTION and Pebbles’ MERCEDES BOY!
I remember it like it was last night!

Can I just add.. I do find SAW mixes quite tedious the longer they go on.
Although as producers SAW are technically very proficient, I personally find their mixes unimaginative and uninspiring. Sorry to all the SAW fans out there. This is just my own personal opinion. No offensive intended.

For me, without doubt, the best mix of Bananarama’s ‘Venus’ is
Marc Almond’s HI NRG Showgirls Mix 🙂 Not an 80’s mix I think, but it is so good.

Thanks Paul. I got the Cd singles box set which has all the remixes. However your vinyl rips are a notch higher. Any chance you could post some early stuff like Aie A Mwana or maybe even Cruel Summer?

I keep on hearing that scream in my brain when I saw that you posted this! I really liked this record and Karen absolutely loved it. I always liked the original Shocking Blue version, but this was a perfect remake when it first came out. One question, is this a re-rip of the 12-inch? I swear you posted this some time back a few years. Doesn’t matter, but I’m just curious. Thanks for this Hi-NRG classic!!

Wild!! I so thought you posted this!! I guess it’s because we have so much of the same tastes in music I automatically think that you have what I have already on your page. I’m so thrilled that it’s here today. You’re the best Paul!!
