Electric Light Orchestra – Getting To The Point (UK 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1986

I found “Getting To The Point” to be very fitting for the world that we find ourselves in today.

“Getting to the Point” is a song by the rock group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) from their 1986 album Balance of Power. Released in the UK as the last single from the album in July 1986, it was the last original release from the band for 15 years.

Due to a strike on Epic’s distribution department at the time of its release, the single did not make much of an impression on the singles chart. It peaked at number 95 in the UK. There was no release in the rest of Europe.

The B-Side of this single is the 1986 Balance of Power album-track “Secret Lives”. It was meant to be a separate single outtake as labelled on the Balance of Power album cover (Dutch pressings with JET or EPIC Label Catno. 26467).

There was also a UK 12 inch Epic 3 track version with the “ELO Megamix” on the B-side. The mix featured the songs from A New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery, Time and Balance of Power. It was mixed by Paul Dakeyne for DMC.

Lindsey Buckingham – Go Insane (Extended Remix) (Germany 12″)

“Go Insane” is the title track of Lindsey Buckingham’s second solo album. Released as a single, 3 July 1984, it became Buckingham’s second solo hit (after “Trouble”, three years earlier). “Go Insane” is Buckingham’s most recent US solo hit (peaking at #23 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart); on the other hand, it did not chart in the United Kingdom.

Lindsey Buckingham has said, when asked about the meaning of the song, insanity can said to be very relative to the context you find yourself in. An example might be a very acceptable and typical behavior for a group of people in a little rock and roll microcosm, might be grounds for someone being committed if they worked in a bank.

“Looking at it that way we all tend to go insane a little bit, I think that’s ok. I think that’s one of the things the album is saying – it is ok to go insane, it can be quite cathartic actually, to watch yourself go out to the edge and sort of reel yourself back in – now hopefully you do reel yourself back in.

“Another point the song makes is if you happen to be with someone else who takes that sort of behavior too far, and you’re not willing to give up whatever that relationship might be – then you will tend to go a little bit insane with them.

“And if they are doing that you will experience a lot of the things they are simply by virtue of being a part of that. The important thing is not to take it too far, I guess.”

At the time, he had a relationship that was close to ending (or maybe had just ended) with Carol Ann Harris. According to Buckingham, she was using drugs and Buckingham tried to stop her, but with no results. Two of his lines, “I lost my power in this world / Cause I did not use it”, could be interpreted to be about how he had waited too long to try to stop her. Harris, however, in her book “Storms,” claims that she only used the drug with the band and her friends and Buckingham used it in equal abundance.

In pop culture the song was featured in the Miami Vice first season episode “The Great McCarthy.”

On the original “Go Insane” LP “Playing In The Rain” is split into two parts on this 12″ it is the full version.

Corey Hart – Eurasian Eyes (Canada 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1985

“Eurasian Eyes” was the fourth single taken from the second studio album “Boy In The Box” recorded by Canadian singer Corey Hart.

Musicians on “Eurasian Eyes” included keyboardist Gary Breit, who subsequently was featured on several of Bryan Adams albums. British saxophonist Andy Hamilton of Duran Duran (“Hungry Like The Wolf”) was also featured. Hamilton was featured on other recording artists studio albums in the 80’s including Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, Pet Shop Boys, George Michael, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Elton John and Wham. Canadian singer, Dalbello, provided backup vocals for Hart, something she was doing elsewhere for Heart (“These Dreams”) Nena (“99 Red Balloons”) and Glass Tiger (“Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone”).

“Eurasian Eyes” peaked at #12 in March 1986 after spending 6 weeks on Vancouver’s CKLG chart. The song was also featured on the soundtrack for the film 9½ Weeks.

Curiosity Killed The Cat – Misfit (US 12″)

Burning The Ground Exclusive 1987

“Misfit” is the debut single by English band Curiosity Killed the Cat, originally released in August 1986. The song was not particularly successful and only reached number 76 on the UK Singles Chart. However, the following year, after the success of “Down to Earth” and “Ordinary Day”, “Misfit” was re-released in June 1987, upon which it was much more successful, peaking at number 7 in the UK.

In the United States “Misfit” peaked at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and number39 on the Billboard Dance chart.

The music video was directed by Andy Warhol and also features a cameo appearance by him. It was also one of his last assignments before his death the following year. The band met Warhol at an exhibition in Mayfair and he took a shine to bass player Nick Thorp. He then invited the band to a banquet he was having later at the Café Royal and said he was interested in hearing some of their music. After listening to “Misfit”, Warhol said he’d ‘love to do a video for you boys’ after Phonogram had said they weren’t going to make a video for it. The video was then shot in New York in a week.
