Wham! – Bad Boys (US 12″)

“Bad Boys” is a song by English pop duo Wham! which was a hit in 1983. It was written and co-produced by George Michael, one half of the duo, and released on Innervision Records.

The song was an energetic but endearing tale of a rebellious teenage lad’s struggle against his parents who are concerned about his late-night activities. Although Michael wrote and sang it from the teenager’s perspective (he was himself only 19 when he composed it and the character refers to being that age in the song), he also penned a middle eight in which the “parents” (Michael putting on more “adult” voices) aired their concerns, which included late nights and cigarettes and ultimately asking, “Why do you have to be so cruel?”. Michael’s father was played by Anthony Souter who was 18 and made up to look older.

It was the third single to be taken from Wham!’s debut album, Fantastic, and reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart, going on to become the 26th best selling single of 1983. At the time, Wham! was projecting a hard, politically motivated image, with “Bad Boys” one of a number of songs projecting a stance of mood and youthful independence, a “soul boy – dole boy” theme. The single was also released in the United States, peaking at number 60. It was the duo’s first time on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, although they were listed as Wham!-UK.

“Bad Boys” became the biggest hit from the debut album, although it would be usurped by “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” from the album Make It Big in 1984, which became the first of four UK number-one singles the duo would enjoy. Michael quickly denounced “Bad Boys” as a song he hated, stating it was “like an albatross round my neck”. The song was famously omitted from the 1997 compilation album The Best of Wham!: If You Were There…, despite the album including tracks that were not released as singles.

Also of note the 12″ Mix was omitted from the 2023 The Singles (Echoes From The Edge Of Heaven) CD single box set.

Though “Bad Boys” only reached #60 nationally in the US, it got a ton of airplay here in Los Angeles. Dee C and Ruby’s backing vocals really brought variety to the song.

Officially released in the last week or so in a CD single box set. Wham Rap on the other hand has quality control issues with error in tracks and omissions. Have a great vacation and worth a look when you return. Cheers!

Wonderful. I hope the set I pre-ordered from AMZ US doesn’t have disc error issues. The song omissions are typical with any compilation release. While they try, they can’t make everyone happy.

Hey Paul

Thank you for this great post. I have just received the vinyl edition of “Echoes…” from Amazon France. The green edition, of course. 🙂 Yes, it´s incomplete but I don´t mind. I have everything they releasd anyway. So it´s a nice addition to my collection. Taylor Swift (in purple), Jamiroquai (in yellow) and depeche Mode (in red and in clear transparent) have also been added. 🙂

All of the forsaken tracks left out of the box, could be compiled into an alternate set “Songs Left Out of Heaven.”
Thanks Paul for sharing these rarities. It s a shame that the recent set is not very comprehensive, they should have asked for your help.

Thanks for the 12″. I’m a big fan of 12″ mixes that stay pretty true to the original. You just get more of what you already like!

Wham! were the perfect pop band.
I’ve been a massive fan since 1982 and I’m so pleased they are getting a lot of attention and recognition at the moment.
Their 12inch remixes were always amazing.

This 12-inch, along with their, “Young Guns (Go For It)” single is what got me interested in the band itself. Believe it or not, but their music was considered to be of the Alternative genre. I loved the cover art as well, projecting a “tough guy” image. Kind of shocked me when I then heard “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” and the change of direction. Thanks so much for bringing this back, Paul. Very timely with the box set release and the documentary. Have a wonderful weekend, Paul, Song And Dance, Retro Hound, Fred, Daniel and all the… Read more »

Let’s hope we one day get deluxe editions for their two albums. There are so many more remixes, edits and demos that need to be released

From all indications from past experience and posts on the SDE site, it’s unlikely GM’s estate will have any interest in licensing any more Wham! material beyond the current Echoes release done to coincide with the Netflix documentary. I await my deluxe singles box at this writing.

Thanks for this. I’ve also noticed that all of the versions of Wham! Rap on the box set have had the ‘take no sh*t from the benefit’ lyric removed.

To be fair, the original “Unsocial Mix” had expletives; after they became UK stars after their TOTP appearance helped them have a #8 hit with “Young Guns”, CBS/Innervision UK and Columbia US reissued and remixed “Wham! Rap” with various edits and major lyric changes that eliminated the naughty words. I reviewed all of these over the weekend until I was dizzy from all the different versions and mixes of this one song! There’s a video of GM in a small club rapping these lyrics over the iconic Eddy Grant-composed club track “Walking On Sunshine” by Rockers Revenge. [note: this was… Read more »
