BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
REQUEST
“Typical Male” was the first single released from Tina Turner’s 1986 album Break Every Rule. The song peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and number three on the R&B Chart. It was also a success on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart. It peaked at number two on the Hot Dance Music chart, and at number 10 on the Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart.
Phil Collins plays drums on this song. “Typical Male” is unusual for a pop song, in that the chorus includes a single measure in 6/4 time.
The B-Side of the single was “Don’t Turn Around” which was produced by Bob Clearmontain and Bryan Adams. The song was previously recorded by Bonnie Tyler, and later covered by Aswad and Ace of Base.

Hi Paul
I am new to your site (and even in this kind of music matters, so I try to learn as I can …) Thanks a lot for this great job. I appreciated to find this version of Typical Male. But I am searching for a version which is more than 7 : 07 in time, it should be around 9 min. In fact, my Dj told me that he has an EXCLUSIVE version that I CAN’T FIND ANYWHERE ! So I am taking up the challenge ! Hope you will help me.
Best regards.
Thanks for a great blog!
One of my personal favorite. 🙂
Thanks Paul! 🙂
It is very surprising to find here another “Bonnie Tyler” Cover here ! It will not be the last time that the beautiful album “Hide Your Heart” or “Notes From America” (both names for the same album) by Bonnie will give hit songs. This album was not well promoted and didn’t make it into the charts.. But this album reveals also another song : “The best”! (which was also a single by Bonnie prior to Tina Turner). Another song from this ambum was “Save Up All Your Tears”, which was consecutiveley covered by Cher and Robin Beck! Bonnie Also covered… Read more »
excellent song, having “don’t turn around” is an extra treat! thanks!
Thank you Feanor. Enjoy!
A typical BTG post full of nostalgic goodness! Thanks Paul! In the week of 18 Oct 1986, the top 3 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 are… 1. When I Think Of You – Janet Jackson 2. Typical Male – Tina Turner 3. True Colors – Cyndi Lauper If my memory holds, this is the first ever time that the Top 3 spots are occupied by solo females. This record was tied in the following week with these same three ladies, with Janet and Cyndi switching positions though. Can’t wait for Two People and it’s brilliant remixes…both the original mix and… Read more »
You’re welcome ric. Thanks for the chart info it’s very interesting 🙂
Thanks so much for filling my request, Paul! It’s much appreciated. I also think you should do “What You Get Is What You See” rather than “Two People”, mostly because didn’t you do “Two People” before? Or was that another blog? Either way, I have a good rip of it and I don’t have “What You Get Is What You See”. lol 😀
You’re welcome Ryan! I have never ripped or posted “Two People” but I am planning to post both singles that way everyone is happy 🙂 Probably “Two People” first since it was asked for first and because chronologically it was the next single.
Okay, great! Thanks! I must have grabbed “Two People” from another blog. 🙂
Excellent job on this, Paul! I had never heard the Dub Mix before, so thank you for that one in particular! As an aside, “Typical Male” was #1 for one week in Cashbox, in between Janet Jackson’s “When I Think Of You” and Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors”. In ’86 when all these songs were on the chart, I only knew of Billboard, so I was a little disappointed that it got stuck at #2 for 3 weeks. If I had heard of Cashbox back then, I might have felt a little better! “Don’t Turn Around” was also covered by Neil… Read more »
Hi Dan thanks for the Cashbox info! Discogs does show a 12″ for “Look Me In The Heart” with a 12″ Remix. Unfortunately I don’t have any singles from that album. Here is the Discogs link: http://www.discogs.com/Tina-Turner-Look-Me-In-The-Heart/release/2474862
Dan, there is indeed a 12″ for Look Me In The Heart. I have the 12″ in storage. And really sucks that the CD single doesn’t have the fabulous version.
Thank you for this great Tina’s song.
You’re welcome Piotrvladimir 🙂
Love her, love this song…… thank you!!
And yeah… “What You Get Is What You See” or “Two People”……… Anything from Her is good!! 🙂
Yeah! One of Tina’s best! Thanks so much for this one Paul.
I second Christian’s request for “What You Get Is What You See”! Brilliant track… But then “Two People” was great too… Oh heck anything Tina is good in my book…
Thanks again Paul!
lol you’re welcome Todd!!
Hi Paul, thanks for this super track, I’ve been waiting a long time.
You’re welcome Guss. I’m glad I finally got around to posting it 🙂
Thanks for this and a great blog. Really impressed with the sound quality. I’d been after the TFF rip of run the world as well so pleased to get this. You haven’t by any chance got John Rocca’s I want it to be real (original 7″ or 12″)as trying to track down this but can only find the later house remixes anywhere.
Joe do you mean the original 1984 mixes or the 1987 remixes? If you can provide me a Discogs link. Thanks
Hi Paul
Its this one on discogs
thanks
Joe

which is the 1984 one – thanks
Hey Joe, I have this one on MP3. If you like it, I will be more than happy to send you..cheers
I second Stefano – great post! Too many Tina remixes are vinyl-only. However, my request for the next post would be “What You Get Is What You See.”
Thank you Christian! So which single was released next “Two People” or “What You Get Is What You See”? I think it was “Two People” but I’m not sure. I know they released eight singles from that album whew!
“Typical Male”
“Back Where You Started”
“Two People”
“Girls”
“What You Get Is What You See”
“Break Every Rule”
“Paradise Is Here”
“Afterglow”
I used “next” to mean preference, not chronology. The list above is the proper order of release. Cheers!
Two People was second single and What You Get third in the US and UK.
Break Every Rule I believe is the fourth in the UK while in the US, the clubs were serviced with Afterglow, my favourite 12″ of Tina from this era.
Ooh, I’d love to hear the 12″ of “Afterglow” if it’s different from the album version. “Break Every Rule” is another great track.
I think “Break Every Rule” was also the fourth single in the US from the album, as well. It made the Hot 100, but surprisingly peaked very low, at #74 I believe.
I know “Back Where You Started” and “Girls” don ‘t have extended versions so you wouldn’t have to worry about it
Nice! Nice! Great mix. Next post ‘Two People’? Would be awesome, Paul. Nowhere to be found on CD…
Thank you Stefano! You never know what might be next 🙂
Hmm, that answer makes me happy already….
