BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1982
“In the Name of Love” is a 1982 single written and performed by The Thompson Twins, at the time a septet (Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie, Joe Leeway, John Roog, Chris Bell, Peter Dodd, and Matthew Seligman). It was the first of twelve entries on the Billboard dance chart for the group, and the first entry for the band in the lower reaches of the US and UK pop charts (peaking outside the UK top 75, and “bubbling under” the hot 100 on the US charts.)
“In the Name of Love” went to number one on the dance music chart and stayed there for five weeks, and spent a total of twenty-one weeks on the chart. It peaked at number sixty-nine on the Billboard R&B chart.

Thank you very much Paul.
Thanks! And thanks for sharing your great posts every week!
Hey there Paul,
Thanks for this. I first heard “In The Name Of Love” on the soundtrack to Ghostbusters. That was a fun little cassette that included a hard to find Laura Branigan track “Hot Night”.
Thanks again, and live stong buddy.
paul, thanks for the great upload. i’m a big fan of the mid thompson twins era. although i favor the sidekicks/quickstep releases. this release was important because it defined the direction they were going. and it was a cool callback they would use in latter songs also. they re-released it in 1988, but the original mix is the better one. i think they had too many people in the band, which is why they slimmed down to a trio (mostly) for the next few albums, before becoming a duo. thanks for keeping the classics alive, and promoting the bands worthy… Read more »
Awesome :-), Great opening for valentine week thank you, Paul.
I Believe TT have several versions of this song the longest one is the Big Value Version 7:07 minutes long and there is also the Railroad Version from ’88.
All this talking about extending Love Week it reminds me “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News, “Love Moves In Strange Ways” by Blue Zoo (1981), and “It Must Be Love” by Madness.
I’d second Madness’ It must be love! FYI, Paul has posted the ’88 12″ BTW which i think (whatever one he posted) includes the Railroad version
Thanks so much for this Paul. I first heard this song on the Ghostbusters soundtrack back in ‘84, and that was the beginning of me becoming a fan of their earlier music. Great start to Love Week, keen to see what you have in store forcall of us.
Hugs
Dean
Great track. Can never get enough TT. Thank You!
You’re welcome Mike C 🙂
A perfect start to LOVE week, and a great track by Thompson Twins. Trying to think of my most played 70’s/80’s songs with the word Love: Duran Duran – I Don’t Want Your Love Pet Shop Boys – Love Comes Quickly David Bowie – Modern Love Depeche Mode – Strangelove (UK & US Mixes) The B-52’s – Love Shack Queen – Crazy Little Thing Called Love Pat Benatar – Love Is a Battlefield Donna Summer – I Feel Love UB40 – (I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You Bee Gees – How Deep Is Your Love Blondie – I’m… Read more »

Squeezes David. Happy LOVE week!
One of my favourite bands and this single was one of the first I purchased in 82.
Thanks Paul 🙂
You’re welcome Mark 🙂
Dearest Paul Good to have you back. I hope you enjoyed your birthday and had a good start into the second half of your lifetime 🙂 And how could one start better into a week of love than with a song called “In The Name Of Love”. It still is one of my favourite TT tracks although I´ve never lost the feeling that it still could have become a bit better. The song itself as well as the uk 12inch version. Bit boring in its structure but still a great song. Or is that a contradiction? I haven´t played the… Read more »
Hi, Song_and_Dance. I had a great birthday thank you. I am terrible at remembering birthdays so please let me wish you a happy one right now Happy Birthday! I agree with you this song could have been so much better with a great remix kind of a missed opportunity but at least TT got a #1 dance track out of it in the USA.
Happy Week of Love Paul and BTG readers/listeners!! What a great way to start the week Paul!! I love this song!! Brings back so many happy memories too. It was my first introduction to this band and it was so great to hear them early on before they exploded on the scene. I love the cover of this UK 12-inch too. Oh Paul, you have such a big heart full of so much light and love that it makes my heart beat faster!!
Hugs,
Jeff
Happy LOVE week Jeff. I kind of prefer their sound during this period when they were a full band 🙂
OMG many thanks. Having suggested ‘Love on your side’ on Friday for inclusion of your ‘Love week’ it would seem i totally overlooked this classic! Many thanks any TT post always makes me happy. Great start to the week and i’m already looking forward to what BTG will bring this week!
For some odd reason, I had it in my head that you asked for “In The Name Of Love”. At any rate, I have “Love On Your Side” as well. Maybe this love week will get an extension for next week 🙂
Lol no problem good to hear that my request was heard and has seemed to contribute to this post. Many thanks again, dear friend.
Thanks Paul. Please post Love On Your Side next?
Maybe next week Omar I might extend LOVE week 🙂
