BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986
“Harlem Shuffle” is an R&B song written and originally recorded by the duo Bob & Earl in 1963. In 1986 it was covered by The Rolling Stones on their album Dirty Work.
The Rolling Stones’ cover version, with Bobby Womack on backing vocals, appeared on their 1986 album Dirty Work and went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and #13 in the UK. Keith Richards had been looking for songs to possibly include on the album and had been working up songs with Ronnie Wood and Womack while waiting for Jagger to return to the studio in Paris after doing promo work on his solo album. To Richards’ surprise, Jagger liked the feel and cut the vocals quickly. It became the first cover song the Stones had released as an opening single off a new studio album since 1965.

A great joy to see this pop up!! Takes me right back to my first true girlfriend – thanks for this, DJPaul!
Well alright!!!
You’ve got to hand it to the ‘Stones!! They never shied away from the 12-inch mix. I know and LOVE this song so much Paul. Both sides are hot, but I do love the B-side just a little bit more. I’m so excited to have your rip, just because I think your mastering is even better than what they do (sometimes) on a compact disc. Your rips are held in such high esteem but so many of us. Especially the audiophiles of the group. Thanks a million for this selection. Oh and please Paul, keep the Mick Jagger twelves coming.… Read more »
They did have a good selection of 12″ singles. Some bands completely missed an opportunity for great remixes like The Cars, for instance, I think “Hello Again” was the only 12″ mix they released with so many more that could have had great mixes.
A unique mix to say the least.
I remember this song having very extensive airplay as well. So military clubs I worked at wouldn’t allow this song to be played for reasons that made no sense to me. But it’s the Stones, man.
Thanks for the mix.
P.S. I have this one in my collection as well.
You’re welcome Dj Veteran 🙂
