“Heartbreak Beat” is a song by the British new wave band the Psychedelic Furs, originally released in 1986 as the lead single for their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight. The song was written by band members Richard Butler, John Ashton, and Tim Butler. The song also appeared on the UK music compilation Hits 5 in November 1986.
Issued as a single, “Heartbreak Beat” reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became the Psychedelic Furs’ only Top 40 hit in the United States. The song also reached the top 20 of both the Billboard Mainstream Rock and Dance charts. Comparatively, the song was less successful in the United Kingdom and peaked at #79 on the UK Singles Chart.

Thanks Paul, love the song and 2 great mixes I haven’t heard. When you posted Danger, I checked and noticed you still had Love My Way available (for me – their absolutely best song) am I right in thinking there are no alternative mix/remixes of the song? If so that would seem odd as those floating keyboards seemed to be crying out for something.

So I check out this site today and don’t recall this song at all. I wasn’t into the PF. I then saw that it got a fairly high chart rank and Youtube’d the album version. Up to about 28 seconds I’m completely still unknown to the song. Then at about 0:34 I find deep, deep, DEEP back in my brain the chorus about 1/2 a second before it is sung! Wait. hi paul, wow, didn’t we see something from them just a little while ago. so now they’re back. well, this to me was a very cool era for them. i know, i know, for the older fans, it was their sellout album, and it was very smooth and commercial. but most bands go through that phase, and for me that was fine. he still had his raspy voice, and they still had those obtuse lyrics. but what is their fascination with ‘heart’s, and things of that nature. they already had another song called ‘heartbeat’. maybe this was a follow up.… Read more »
Yeah, I posted “Danger” a few weeks ago then this got requested so I am trying to fill all my Furs bases 🙂 They do seem to like hearts for sure. I enjoyed this period as well as their early work.
