Tears For Fears – Everybody Wants To Run The World (UK 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1986

“Everybody Wants to Run the World” is a re-recording of the song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, originally written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes of the British band Tears for Fears and featured on the band’s 1985 second LP Songs from the Big Chair.

The re-jigged single was released in 1986 to promote the Sport Aid campaign, a charitable event held to raise money for famine relief in Africa. It was a success in the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band’s sixth top 5 hit, peaking at #5 in June 1986. The song also reached #4 in Ireland.

“…to get Bob Geldof off our backs! He gave us so much gip for not turning up at Live Aid. All those millions of people dying, it was our fault. I felt terrible. I tell you, I know how Hitler must have felt.”
—Roland Orzabal, on why the song was re-recorded

The new song was meant to be included on the 2006 remaster of Songs from the Big Chair, but was mistakenly replaced by a repetition of the album version (incorrectly labeled as the ‘7″ version’ (such a version does not exist)); the album’s liner notes confirm this.

Thank you so much Paul for this excellent (as per usual) rip!! I’m a long-time fan of TFF and it’s great to be able to add this to my collection. I’m so glad that I picked up the superb Mobile Fidelity remastering of SFTBC back in ’98. It included the full-legth UK mix (8:17) and the extended version of EWTRTW. I’m still waiting for a proper deluxe edition of “The Hurting’! Paul, would you happen to have the Canadian 12” single for ‘Change’ which includes the full-length ‘New Version’, which is actually an early mix with alternate lyrics? In your… Read more »

I second that request for the early version of Change, if possible. Have never heard it, and much prefer TFF’s early stuff before they got pompous (well, only Roland did in all fairness).

Well, even if it’s included in the remasters, I doubt the recording would match that of BTG’s! Thanks for your rip, Paul! And for all the brilliance of TFF, they never had a #1 single in the UK charts!!! Such a crime! I remember reading about the story in 1986 on why they did not appear on Live Aid, and it’s not quite the same as what was on Wiki…I recall the duo were not impressed on how Live Aid was “abused” as an event for artistes to promote their music, and also the music has sort of overtaken its… Read more »

Blimey that cover is evocative. The 7″ is one of the first I ever bought with my own cash.

Wow! I’ve been looking for this for years! These special “Run” versions are very hard to find. In fact, I’ve never even heard them before because I’ve never been able to find them (in a digital format, that is). It’s a shame that Universal goofed and didn’t include these versions, in addition to a handful of other missing mixes (such as the U.K. Extended Remix of “Shout”), on the 2006 2-CD deluxe edition of ‘Songs From The Big Chair’. A hugely missed opportunity! Instead, we got a repeat of the original version of “Rule The World”. Quality control, anyone? Nonetheless,… Read more »
