“Such a Shame” is a song written by Mark Hollis for the English band Talk Talk’s second album It’s My Life (1984).
It was released as the album’s second single in 1984 and became a big hit in continental Europe in 1984 and 1985, reaching the Top 10 in several countries, and becoming a number one in certain territories (their third number one single after the remixed version of their song “Talk Talk” which topped the South African charts in 1983 and the single “It’s My Life” which was number one in the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play in 1984); but strangely this single was largely ignored in the UK. In the US, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100, and was a Top 20 hit in the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play.
The Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero US remixes are exclusive to the US 12″ releases.

The Dub Mix is also on 12×12 Original Remixes. Such A Shame (12″ U.S. Remix – Extended Version)was on It’s My Mix and in CD form appears on Maxi Singles 80 Volume 2.
This was a monster hit in Europe! How they missed it in the UK is a mystery to me. Was and is, one of the coolest 80s song. Superb US mixes, still prefer the original 7″, but the US Remix is far better then the standard Extended Mix, and the Dub Mix a special bonus treat!

Thanks for this one. I was living in the UK when this came out and missed it completely. However, I remember “Dum Dum Girl” from the same Talk Talk LP being played to death on UK radio.

Like a few others I’m super-psyched to get the US 7″ mix of this track in excellent quality (I’ve only got a scratchy old 7″). I’m hoping you’ve got the Dennis Weinreich remix of “Life’s What You Make It” (UK 12″) to come at some point. I never managed to pick that one up…

The Dub Mix did appear on the CD singles compilation “Asides Besides” in 1998. Much as I like the original 12″ Mix, I really love the Thompson/Barbiero Extended Mix. Interestingly, listen to the band’s live versions of the song from circa 1984-1986 which seem closely based on this latter mix and you might suppose they felt the same way! Great post! Wow, this is one of my all time favourite 12 inches of the 80’s. Excellent remix, of course. What can we say about Thompson & Barbiero, legendary guys. They made some great mixes.
