Just downloaded it because I’m always curious about rare KW releases and just discovered something amazing: The mix of ‘Computer Love’ in this promo is DIFFERENT from the one in the album. I’m a big Kraftwerk fan collector an never heard about this (we should call it) ‘Promo Mix’. Thank you very much PAUL.
I’ve been re-creating many Kraftwerk 7″ and 12″ edits from full-length CD sources the last few months and while I’ve been a fan since 1983, researching all these different mixes has been a real education! I have to reiterate what Walter C said: The version of “Computer Love” on this 12″ is, without a doubt, DIFFERENT from the album version. I have listened to the “Computer World” album so many times that when I listened to THIS recording of “Computer Love”, I knew literally from the first 5 seconds that it was NOT the album version. The most obvious way to distinguish the 12″ mix and the album version is that the former doesn’t have the weird temporal fade out on the left channel around the 50 second mark that plagues all masters of the latter (https://youtu.be/ZtWTUt2RZh0?t=54s). It helps to make this single a more pleasent listen, with it being more refined.
I’d say a more obvious way is to check for the bubbly, arpeggiated synth at 0:43. It’s not there at all in the album version, but it is in the single versions, including the one on this 12″. Also, I’m not sure about other CD releases from the ’80s, but “Numbers” on the US CD (3549-2) is mastered with severe aliasing (an artifact of poor sample rate conversion) in the first 24 seconds. The album Computer World is one of the most important foundation of electronic music and still sounds fascinating, hypnotic and unreal to me today, as it sounded when I heard it for the 1st time 30+ years ago. The scary thing, it sounds so up to date! Numbers? Well, yes, just some cool looking dudes with ties, and a German accent, counting in different languages! LOL. Very good to see this! Kraftwerk’s music is very difficult to apply any kind of automatic declicker to without also softening all the sharp sounds. This must have taken forever to do by hand. Thanks!
What Paul does simply boggles the mind. The suffering for his art! I love all you technical experts out here to school me in what it takes to bring out the fidelity of a record. Oh wow Kraftwerk! Did i mention i saw them 5 times in a week in Jan 2013 in London, 4 times in 30 hours May 2014 in Vienna and twice in 28 hours in January 2015 in Amsterdam? Lol. Seriously it’s fantastic to have more Kraftwerk here so many edits and remixes from around the world unreleased on CD to date. More please 🙂
I think these are identical to the album versions which is a shame. If you have any Kraftwerk 7″s i’m sure there are more rarer edits there. Forgot to mention the gigs in 1997 and 2004. Only totals 13. I have a friend who is booked for his 100th Krafterk gig. He may be honoured although i doubt KW will break from tradition and mention it. I meaned the 1978 french extended mix of Les Mannequins. And by Balanescu I meaned a great violonist, who covered The Model with a string quartet.
