Forty years ago, in November 1985, three members of Duran Duran stepped sideways into a lush, art-driven dreamscape and created one of the most daring projects of the decade. Arcadia’s So Red the Rose wasn’t just a side-project — it was a manifesto. A stylish, romantic, avant-pop statement that embraced everything bold, beautiful, and experimental about the mid-80s.

Where Duran Duran were conquering arenas and MTV, Arcadia — Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor — leaned into a darker, more atmospheric world. So Red the Rose shimmered with shadow and elegance, wrapped in high fashion, surrealist imagery, and a sonic palette as rich as its crimson title. If Duran Duran were the soundtrack to neon nightlife, Arcadia was the soundtrack to a midnight art gallery.

The Sound of a Band Breaking Rules

Produced with Alex Sadkin and featuring an extraordinary lineup of guests — Grace Jones, Sting, David Gilmour, Herbie Hancock, and Nile Rodgers — the album felt like a fever dream brought to life. Its textures drifted through ambient pop, art rock, post-punk drama, and gilded synth atmospheres.

“Election Day,” the album’s biggest hit, was a swirling, mysterious epic anchored by Grace Jones’ unforgettable spoken-word performance. “Goodbye Is Forever,” “The Flame,” and the towering “The Promise” showcased the trio’s ambition, pushing the boundaries of what mainstream pop could be in 1985.

And then there was “Lady Ice,” “El Diablo,” and “Missing” — cinematic, moody, gorgeously produced deep cuts that revealed just how committed Arcadia were to crafting a complete world.

Visuals as Bold as the Music

Arcadia didn’t just make an album — they created a universe. Sleek black-and-white photography, painted masks, couture glamour, the long-form Arcadia Video collection… everything was meticulously curated. It was Art with a capital A, as if Duran Duran’s New Romantic roots had blossomed into a baroque bloom.

Even the videos felt like museum pieces — stylish, symbolic, and dreamlike. In 1985, nobody else in pop was doing anything quite like Arcadia.

Four decades later, So Red the Rose stands as one of the essential cult classics of the 80s. It remains a testament to artistic freedom at the height of commercial success — the sound of musicians choosing to explore their imagination rather than repeat themselves.

Many fans consider it the “true” third Duran Duran album in spirit, a spiritual sibling to Rio in its glamour and to Seven and the Ragged Tiger in its mystery. It’s an album that rewards deep listening, late-night headphones, and anyone who loves the lush, dramatic side of the decade.

In 2025, So Red the Rose still feels like a rare gem: elegant, strange, hypnotic, timeless.

Arcadia – The Promise (Extended Remix) (UK 12″)

“The Promise” was the third single released by Arcadia, the Duran Duran offshoot band. Issued by Parlophone in 1986 as their second UK single, it reached number 37 on the UK Singles Chart.

The track features uncredited backing vocals from Sting. During Arcadia’s recording sessions for “So Red the Rose” in Paris, the band attended a Sting concert and decided to invite him to contribute to their album. They were particularly intrigued by the vocal chemistry between Sting and lead singer Simon Le Bon, first heard on Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Sting graciously accepted, resulting in a collaboration that became one of the group’s favorite moments on the record. Enhancing the track further, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour delivered expressive guitar work that added a haunting and ethereal quality, especially in its climactic sections.

The single version of “The Promise” was trimmed significantly from the album’s original 7:28 runtime to a more radio-friendly 4:50. Even the “extended remix,” produced by Alex Sadkin and Ron Saint Germain, ran slightly shorter than the album cut, clocking in at 7:05. The B-side of the single featured an extended mix of the album track “Rose Arcana.”

While “So Red the Rose” didn’t reach the commercial success of Duran Duran’s biggest albums, it earned critical praise and has since developed a devoted fanbase. “The Promise” stands out as a highlight, celebrated for its ambitious artistry and the rare collaboration of such iconic talents. For fans of Duran Duran and 1980s art-rock, the song remains an underrated gem and a testament to the creative freedom Arcadia embraced during this transitional period in their careers.

Although Roger Taylor, the drummer for Arcadia, appeared in only a few promotional photos and the music video for Election Day, his primary focus was on the recording side of the project. Taylor also contributed percussion to The Power Station, another Duran Duran offshoot.

“Love Is the Seventh Wave” was the second single and second track from Sting’s 1985 solo debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. The song is supposedly about love being the seventh wave or the strongest wave in a series of waves, thus wiping out any sort of problems. It concludes with a brief, self-mocking reference to Sting’s biggest hit song with The Police, “Every Breath You Take”, which had been about the dark side of love that leads to sexual jealousy and obsession.

The single contained a different mix of the song than the album mix, as well as a live version of “Consider Me Gone.”

“Love Is The Seventh Wave” debuted in the US Billboard Top 40 on November 23, 1985. The song remained in the top 40 for seventeen weeks peaking at #9.

Do They Know It’s Christmas?” is a song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to raise money for relief of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The original version was produced by Midge Ure and released by Band Aid on 29 November 1984.

In October 1984, a BBC report by Michael Buerk was aired in the UK, which highlighted the famine that had hit the people of Ethiopia. Irish singer Bob Geldof saw the report and wanted to raise money. He called Midge Ure from Ultravox and together they quickly co-wrote the song, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.

Geldof kept a November appointment with BBC Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner to appear on his show, but instead of discussing his new album (the original reason for his booking), he used his airtime to publicise the idea for the charity single, so by the time the musicians were recruited there was intense media interest in the subject. Geldof put together a group called Band Aid, consisting of leading British and Irish musicians who were among the most popular of the era. On 25 November 1984, the song was recorded at Sarm West Studios in Notting Hill, London, and was released four days later.

The 1984 original became the biggest selling single in UK Singles Chart history, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at Number 1 for five weeks, becoming Christmas number one, and has sold 3.69 million copies domestically. It remained the highest selling single in UK chart history until 1997, when Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind 1997” was released in tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, which sold almost 5 million copies in Britain. Worldwide, the single had sold 11.8 million copies by 1989.

Following the release of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in December 1984 and record sales in aid of famine relief, Geldof then set his sights on staging a huge concert, 1985’s Live Aid, to raise further funds.

The song was re-recorded in 1989 by Band Aid II and in 2004 by Band Aid 20, again raising funds for famine relief. The 2004 version of the song sold 1.16 million copies.
