BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1989
“Hey Music Lover” was the third and final single taken from the debut album “Original Soundtrack” by British band S’Express. The single reached #6 in the UK Singles chart, #26 in the equivalent chart in Germany, and #6 in the U.S. Dance chart. For its U.S. release, the song was inexplicably titled just “Music Lover” (no “Hey”), even though the original title remained on the album. The U.S. editions contain exclusive remixes.
Vocals on Hey Music Lover by Billie Ray Martin and Eric Robinson. US mixes have a couple of extra lines sung by Billie Ray Martin that never made it onto any of the UK mixes (“I just want to sing to you ’cause playing bad is hard to do”).
Note change of spelling from S’Express to S’Xpress. Radio interviewers would ask “…so why did you drop the E?” and the band would burst into uncontrollable laughter.

I remember when this was released the were three 12″s, and the third included a clear folded wallet to contain all three 12″s, which I still have.
Yeah that was the very cool UK release I only have the first two which are still sealed.

Thanks, Paul. Love S’Express (I didn’t drop any E). But more than that, I absolutely adore Billie Ray Martin, and had no idea she sang some of the vocals on this track (and also on “Pimps, Pushers, Prostitutes”). Of course, she made a name for herself with Electribe 101 a couple of years later, and continues to make incredible dance music to this day (she even released a soul album earlier this year). Sorry miran0019 I never bought Mantra but maybe I will track down a copy for future post. We never really got to know Billie Ray Martin in the US except for “Your Loving Arms” which did get radio play here in the USA.

I’d always loved in the 80s the remixes that were imported in Europe from the US,
especially the remixes by Shep Pettibone, but at that time I was young
and I hadn’t so much money to buy them all
and the 12″ imported were more expansive,
but now thanks to You I can finally collect them.

Hi Paul. Many thanks for posting all these S-Express mixes. Brings back great memories as well as giving me clean copies to replace my well-worn originals! I’ve always loved this one in particular because Billie Ray Martin is on it. I bumped into Mark at Billie’s recent gig in London. They’re still close friends even after all these years. Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere but check out the recent S-Express remix album. Great new versions of all these classic tunes!

Oh Paul!! There are times when you have me grinning like a Cheshire Cat over what you bring to life!! These Shep mixes are pretty amazing!! Love the dub version because of the inclusion of Freeez’s electro classic “I.O.U.” with that great intro from John Robie and the, almost “Psycho” inspired string stabs. I love that section so much and to have Shep and Chep to slice, dice and loop this section in was amazing. I loved Acid House as a genre so much.
