Sting – If You Love Somebody Set Them Free (US 12″)

BURNING THE GROUND EXCLUSIVE 1985

“If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” is the first single released from Sting’s solo debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. It is also the opening track of the album and is featured on Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting 1984–1994 as well as The Very Best of Sting & The Police.

Like much of the album, the song has heavy jazz influences, and was a major hit, peaking at number one on the US Album Rock Tracks chart for three weeks. On the US pop chart, it peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 17 on the US R&B chart, number 26 on the UK Singles Chart, and number 18 on the Australian Kent Music Report singles chart.

A portion of the song was later used for Sting’s 1987 hit “We’ll Be Together” from …Nothing Like the Sun.

The single launched a long string of singles(stretching over three albums) where Sting collaborated with New Orleans saxophonist and one-time Tonight Show bandleader Branford Marsalis.

The song was also performed at The Brits in February 1995 with M People. He duetted on the song with the band’s lead singer, Heather Small and this track was given the dance treatment by the band who was also backed by a 100-strong Gospel Choir at the Earls Court Arena during the annual music awards show.

Sting said that he wrote the song as an “antidote” to the Police’s 1983 song, “Every Breath You Take”, which he also wrote. The song was also lampooned by The Dead Milkmen in the song “If You Love Somebody, Set Them on Fire,” from their 1990 album Metaphysical Graffiti.

The single B-side consists of a studio recording of the song “Another Day” which would appear the following year in a live version on Sting’s live album Bring On the Night.

Loved The Police and Sting’s solo career.

Please can you eventually post Englishman In New York (The Ben Liebrand Mix) + other mixes (great song).
I really enjoyed listening to your vinyl restoration of If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.
Sting did a great cover of Spread a Little Happiness for the 1982 film Brimstone and Treacle.

Thank You Paul.

This is one of my favorites from Sting, so glad to see this on here Paul. Thank you. The song ‘Every Breath You Take’ from the Police has got to be one of the biggest and more wonderful hits from the 80’s, but I doubt there is a 12″ remix of that song. I rate ‘Every Breath You Take’ somewhere in my top 40 Classics from the 80’s. Maybe a 7″ single in the future?

Always love the unexpected surprise on here. Thanks Paul, hope you had a Fantastic Birthday.

The Orbit mix is really unique as it is an entirely different production, likely a test run for the direction Sting was deciding to take on his solo record. The Jellybean mix did get a cd release on the 1990 re-release of Englishman in New York, there was also a jelleybean radio mix done as well released on 7″. Thank you for the excellent transfer here. Great recod, brings me back to my early record buying days.

Thanks, Joey!! I think you are referring to this cd single: https://www.discogs.com/Sting-Englishman-In-New-York-The-Ben-Liebrand-Mix/master/832232

Although I love Paul’s rips, I will probably buy it and add it to my massive cd single collection. Boy, I really wish cd singles arrived in mainstream before 1989. And I wish the record companies would re-release all the 12″s on cd single format. 😉

Thanks again for the tip!

Yes, that is the one. Cd technology was still new the, and the ephemeral nature of the single betrayed the format, which is why this stuff has been forgotten. I am really greatful to Paul for making such high quality transfers, I am also greatful for his impeccable taste in music. It does not look like this stuff will get reissued any time soon.

Thanks you so much Paul for posting this fantastic 12″. I have it too and I love it. The remixes are exquisite. As far as I know the Orbit Remix has never appeared on CD. It’s great to get it in pristine quality.

Has the Jellybean remix been released on cd? I haven’t scouted discovs yet but I have meaning to.

William Orbit…just so talented and was such a joy to hear his work so far back in the mid 80s. His mixes of Crazy by Seal and Erotica by Madonna are legendary.

Paul…stunning remixes and 12″!!! Thank you so much for this rip and it sounds incredible! I remember hearing these mixes on the radio back in 1986 on the David Lawrence Show (“Time now for David Lawrence’s…big…12…inch!”).

Also, Sting released a boatload of If You Love Somebody remixes in 1994 on a double 12″ promo (which I have)…everyone here should definitely check them out!! They are great, too!

Yes I believe I requested this a long time ago but there is no need for an apology!! 🙂

Those soul power remixes on the 1994 release are great but only a few of them ended up on cd singles.

Thanks in advance for any future Sting and Police!!

(altought many thanks for your hard work here) there is 2 things about later remixes – because 1994 SOULPOWER (which i strongly played at the clubs) made some deep and house too which is rare to find + 1995 BROTHERS IN RHYTHM nice soulful, short edit on cds but amazing full 11:30 version again mostly for djs/fans

I so worship you and this site Paul!! The musical diversity on this site is astounding!! One will never know what’s in store and that’s the way I like it. Like Pete Burns says: “I want surprises!” You certainly deliver……EVERYDAY!!! I’m reeling over this release as it has a Jellybean dance mix and a William Orbit one to boot!! I am truly awe-struck!! You have totally cheered me up for the day as I’m a bit bummed over the Winter weather. Thanks Paul for doing so much for our mental health. Music can certainly heal the blues and other maladies… Read more »
